Go to Heaven is the twelfth studio album by the band Grateful Dead .

history

As the producer of the last album Shakedown Street Lowell George at one in June 1979. heart attack died, the band Gary Lyons brought added as a producer, who previously co-founder of the label ZTT Gary Langan anlernte.

After the couple Keith and Donna Godchaux left the Grateful Dead due to internal differences (they saw no opportunity for themselves to play a bigger role in the band), the band found an adequate replacement in Brent Mydland , who was a member of the for eleven years until his drug death Tape should be. In contrast to Keith Godchaux, Mydland mostly played a Hammond B3 organ , as it was previously played by Ron McKernan , as well as synthesizers . Godchaux was a staunch pianist . Except for the song " Antwerp's Placebo ", which is a 38 second long purely instrumental piece, all tracks on the LP have found their way into the band's live repertoire.

The closing song " Don't Ease Me In " is one of the oldest songs played by the band. They interpreted it as early as 1965, when the Grateful Dead was still called The Warlocks .

Although Go to Heaven, like all of the band's studio albums, has been heavily criticized, some of the classics are on this album, including " Lost Sailor " and " Saint of Circumstance " by Bob Weir , which are comparable to " Weather Report Suite " of Wake of the Flood are in melody and tempo.

For the album cover was back Stanley Mouse in charge, the last Europe '72 had designed for the Grateful Dead.

The album was first released on CD in 1990, before a revised version of the nine songs and six additional songs were released by Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) in 2004 , which were then also released as a single CD in 2006.

The album was in the Billboard Charts for 20 weeks and reached number 23 and the single " Alabama Getaway " reached number 68.
