chronology
Go to Heaven (1980) Reckoning Dead Set (1981)

Reckoning is a Live - double album of the band Grateful Dead to the fifteen-year anniversary.

history

The recordings are from performances at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco from September 21 to October 14, 1980 and from October 22 to 31 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City . Some of the songs can only be heard in abbreviated form on the LP.

After Go to Heaven proved a failure, the Grateful Dead focused again on performing live and recording live albums, which was positively received by fans and critics.

The recordings of the performances should actually be used for a double album. But in order to get a good quality and a good format, the recordings were divided into two double albums. The other recordings of these appearances can be heard on the album Dead Set , which was released in August 1981. Reckoning contains the acoustic tracks and Dead Set the electric tracks.

In addition to the two albums, there is a documentary called Dead Ahead about the birthday appearances on October 30th and 31st, which was also broadcast live on television, in which the acoustic and electrical recordings can be heard mixed.

Jerry Garcia commented on this in an interview that they just had too much good material. The idea of an acoustic and an electric album was pathetic, especially since the electronic recordings were seldom shorter than eight minutes. That would mean that there would only be two songs per LP side, which was stupid.

In terms of songs, the album is similar to the Workingman's Dead and American Beauty albums , as traditional songs and bluegrass material were largely used.

In 1984 the album was released on CD without the recording Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie by Elizabeth Cotten under the name For The Faithful by Pair and Arista Records and in 1988 in the same form again under the actual name. In 2004 a revised version of the 15 songs and 16 others appeared on a bonus CD from Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) , which were then released in 2006 as a single CD. Here Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie was taken into account again.

The album reached number 43 in the Billboard charts and the single Dire Wolf reached number 37 in the mainstream rock charts.
