Marty Robbins
Marty Robbins (born September 26, 1925 as Martin David Robinson in Glendale , Arizona , † December 8, 1982 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country singer and songwriter. In his thirty-year career, he has had numerous hits in both the country and pop charts, including his best-known song El Paso .
Life
Beginnings
Robbins childhood was shaped by his grandfather Bob Heckle, who as a traveling “miracle doctor” had a large supply of stories from the Wild West . The boy was also taken with the popular western films of the thirties with the great star Gene Autry . He dropped out of school, worked intermittently on his brother's ranch and, as a hobo , came into conflict with the law several times. In 1943 he joined the US Navy. Here he learned to play the guitar and wrote his first songs. He owed the breakthrough in his songs to his father, who often supported and accompanied him. After his release, he made a living in his hometown of Glendale with appearances in the club scene and on local radio stations. His music went down well with the audience, and so he got his own show on a Phoenix- based TV station, the Western Caravan .
Career
In 1951, Little Jimmy Dickens appeared on Robbins TV show and was impressed by the young singer. He recommended him to the Columbia label, and a few months later a record deal was signed. His first two singles were unsuccessful, but I'll Go on Alone reached number one on the country charts in January 1953. Robbins moved to Nashville with his wife and children and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry . He also got a job at the renowned Acuff Rose publishing house.
It was the time of musical upheaval. The rock 'n' roll dominated the scene and urged the country music in the background. Marty Robbins was one of the few who was flexible enough to adapt to the new circumstances. He initially covered a few rock'n'roll tracks with moderate success and then turned to pop music. In 1956 he achieved another top hit with Singing the Blues , which stayed at the top of the country charts for thirteen weeks. Guy Mitchell dominated the pop market with the same title . With his next but one single, A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation) produced by Mitch Miller , he had his big break in 1957. The song he wrote himself, in which the Ray Conniff Singers participated, made it to the top of the country charts and to number two on the pop hit parade.
Robbins recorded a few more pop-oriented songs until he had his biggest hit in 1959 with the sentimental western song El Paso . The piece stayed at the top of the country charts for six weeks and earned him a Grammy in 1961 . An equally successful album followed, Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs , which was inspired by his grandfather's stories. Robbins had thus ended his pop phase and in the following years mainly published Western songs, often with a Tex-Mex touch. With hits like Devil Woman , Don't Worry or Ruby Ann , he achieved further number 1 hits. Occasionally he went on excursions into Hawaiian music or jazz .
During these years he took on small roles in western films for the first time. In 1962 he started racing, which soon became his great passion. The sales of his records decreased slightly, although he was still regularly represented in the top 10 and had a few number 1 hits. He still performed at the Opry every week. There were also numerous stock car races. In 1969 he suffered a severe heart attack , which he survived without any consequences. In 1971 he won his second Grammy with My Woman, My Woman, My Wife .
In 1972, after twenty years, he left the Columbia label and switched to Decca Records . However, the success did not materialize here, so that after three years he returned to his old label. Almost immediately he had his next number 1 hits with El Paso City and Among My Souvenirs . In 1974 he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame . In the same year he had a serious racing accident that resulted in several broken bones.
Over the years, its popularity waned. A new generation of musicians had come to the fore. Marty Robbins concentrated more and more on the film business and also took on the lead role in a television series. In 1982 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame . Two months later, on December 8, 1982, he died of another heart attack in Nashville. In a thirty-year career that spanned North America as well as Europe, Robbins achieved 94 hits, including 17 number 1 hits in the country charts.
