Among My Souvenirs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Among My Souvenirs is a pop song that Horacio Nicholls (music, a pseudonym for music publisher Lawrence Wright ) and Edgar Leslie (lyrics) wrote and published in 1927.

background

The genesis of Among My Souvenirs is controversial; Al Dubin is said to have sold the song to songwriter Edgar Leslie (1885-1976) for $ 25 because he needed the money for a game of poker . According to other sources, the song was written during a stay in England, during which Leslie collaborated with the composer and music publisher Lawrence Wright. The song became popular first in England through the recording of Jack Hylton , then in the United States through Paul Whiteman . The song is written as a moderate ballad in E major in the form AABA ; “The refrain is a study of minimalism, with a cleverly scaled melody of a few notes, each repeated once.” The last two sections of the refrain each comprise nine bars , with a total length of 34 bars.

First recordings and later cover versions

Other musicians who covered the song early on included Ben Selvin , Roger Wolfe Kahn , The Revelers , the California Ramblers , Seger Ellis , in Paris (Pathe) and Berlin (Homochord) the Lud Gluskin orchestra and the Håkan von Eichwald Jazz Orchestra. The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 40 (as of 2015) cover versions in the field of jazz , u. a. by Louis Armstrong , Tex Beneke , Dave Brubeck , Benny Carter , Herbie Fields , Helen Humes , Etta Jones , Elliot Lawrence , Hal McIntyre , Knocky Parker , Ken Peplowski , Jesse Powell , Eddie South , Art Tatum and Clark Terry . Hoagy Carmichael presented the song in the film The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). Among My Souvenirs was also covered by Bing Crosby (1947), Connie Francis (1959), Judy Garland (1957), Vera Lynn , Marty Robbins and Frank Sinatra .
