Honkytonk Man is a 1982 American film directed by Clint Eastwood , who also produced and starred. The script was written by Clancy Carlile based on his own novel, which in turn was inspired by the short life of country musician Jimmie Rodgers .
action
The action takes place in the USA during the Great Depression . The alcoholic and lung sick Red Stovall dreams of a great career as a country singer. So far he has appeared in small bars or as an accompanist for blues bands. As a composer he was able to record his first success as the well-known musician Bob Wills recorded one of his songs.
While Stovall visits his sister and her family, he becomes increasingly friends with his little nephew Whit. Finally, the two travel to Nashville with Whit's grandfather , where Red was invited to audition at the Grand Ole Opry . The money for the trip is financed through appearances in bars, but also through a chicken theft in which Red is caught by the police and arrested. Whit frees him from prison by, inspired by a western film, pulling the window bars with the car and a rope out of the wall.
Red also tries to collect old debts from the seedy Arnspringer. He tries to cheat on Red and sends him on a fictitious robbery. Red barely escapes the trap and confronts Arnspringer. With the money they have now received, Red and Whit start the rest of their journey. The girl Marlene, who lives with Arnspringer, snuck into the car unnoticed to escape. During a police check, the girl is discovered by the policeman in the trunk. Red finds it difficult to explain, and Marlene now unintentionally travels with him. While drunk, Red spends a night with Marlene, who then claims to be pregnant. In the event of a car defect and the associated multi-day workshop visit, the travelers separate: Grandfather travels on to California on his own, Red takes the bus to Nashville, Whit follows a few days later with the repaired car. The girl Marlene is "forgotten" by Whit on the instructions of his uncle.
During the trip, Stovall , who had tuberculosis, worsened . Due to a coughing fit, Stovall even had to break off the audition at the Grand Ole Opry, the actual destination of his trip, his big dream of becoming famous seems to have been shattered.
The producer and talent scout Smoky who was present at the audition recognizes Red's talent and offers him a record deal, knowing about the musician's health. Stovall just manages to record some of his songs with Smoky in Nashville the next day. He cannot finish the last song himself; one of the accompanying musicians takes over the second half for him. Cared for by his nephew and the reappeared Marlene, who admits she is not pregnant, Red dies of his serious illness shortly after the recordings in Nashville. After the funeral, which only Whit and Marlene attend, Red's songs are on the radio.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on December 17, 1982 that the film was "cute" and "quirky"; he makes the audience feel good. The character played by Clint Eastwood is very different from the tough men he usually plays ("it provides Eastwood with a screen character who is the complete opposite of the patented Eastwood tough guys"). The pictures of the trip are "romantic" and "nostalgic". The best scenes are those in which Eastwood sings in Nashville in the studio and in front of an audience. Clint Eastwood seems to have a personal relationship with the subject that the film is conveying to viewers. The lexicon of international films wrote: "Humorous and witty, the film impresses with its professional style and humane worldview, both as a portrait of the American province during the time of depression and as a cautious story of initiation of a young man."
