Sully is an American feature film by Clint Eastwood from the year 2016 , that of the landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in 2009 on the Hudson River is in New York. It was released in theaters in the United States on September 9, 2016; it opened in German cinemas on December 1, 2016.

action

A large airliner flies through the urban canyons of New York and crashes. The pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger awakes from this nightmare , who, together with his co-pilot Jeff Skiles, has to answer to the American aviation safety authority, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The two had a few minutes after taking off from the airport in New York LaGuardia due to problems with the engines to bird strikes a ditching in the Hudson River performed. All 155 people on board had surprisingly survived. The air traffic controller had previously suggested returning to LaGuardia or making an emergency landing at the nearby Teterboro Airport . Sullenberger estimated that the time was too short due to the low altitude of the machine. The authority, on the other hand, is of the opinion that a landing at the two airports would have been possible, and sees itself confirmed by computer simulations by the aircraft manufacturer Airbus . The investigation is now to clarify whether Sullenberger possibly put the passengers in unnecessary danger and ruined the aircraft to a total loss . For the public, however, “Sully” is a hero. He has trouble fighting off the onslaught on his person. The two pilots, who are quartered in a hotel, get some variety by jogging and appearing on talk show host David Letterman . Meanwhile, Sullenberger's wife worries about the future when he phone her to tell her about the investigation, as the family has financial problems because of a property that cannot be rented and Sully has no income for the time of the investigation.

At Sullenberger's instigation, Airbus is accelerating the re-enactment of the unfortunate flight with real pilots, so that these simulations carried out in Toulouse can be played live at the crucial hearing and repeated with other parameters on request. The simulations initially show that the machine can be safely landed at both airports. Inquiries from Sullenberger and Skiles, however, quickly revealed that the simulator pilots had been told that they should begin their approaches to the respective airport immediately after the simulated bird strike and that the pilots had been able to practice the simulation several times beforehand. Sullenberger argues that the “human factor” is not taken into account, because no pilot is prepared for such a situation - double-sided engine failure at an altitude of only 900 meters. He and Skiles were completely surprised by the bird strike. You would have needed time to first grasp the situation, weigh the alternatives and make a decision. In this phase, the non-powered aircraft had of course steadily lost altitude. Sullenberger accuses the investigative committee of deliberately aiming for the result of “ human error ”. The investigators then admitted that the simulator pilots were only allowed to begin their measures 35 seconds after the bird strike. With this specification, both emergency landings in the simulator no longer succeed. Finally the communication of the original flight is played. Everyone is impressed with the professionalism with which the crew mastered the emergency situation. Sullenberger and Skiles are rehabilitated.

The flight is shown in the film once after the investigation has started, with a focus on the flight attendants, some of whom are introduced; the subsequent rescue measures are also shown. And a second time, when the conversation recordings are played back during the hearing, with the action in the cockpit.

During the credits, the meeting of the real crew with passengers from US Airways Flight 1549 is shown in the Carolinas Aviation Museum .

Reviews

“Eastwood virtuously jumps back and forth in time without the film ever losing its remarkable clarity and directness: flashbacks to Sullenberger's time as a military pilot, a childhood memory, short scenes before and after the NTSB investigation - all of these contribute to understanding the Main character and their actions - and when the director finally presents the spectacular ditching in full epic breadth, with all the roaring noises, all the painstakingly suppressed panic of the passengers and the just as painstakingly controlled prudence of the crew, then that has an undeniable emotional punch that is amplified when people are rescued from the sinking plane when New York rescue workers meet in a matter of minutes - without any gimmicky! "

- Carsten Baumgardt : film starts

“After Eastwood had turned a sniper into a disgusting military hero in his previous film ' American Sniper ' (2014), he is now paying homage to an everyday hero who is bursting with a sense of duty, a sense of order and honesty. What's more, 'Sully' can be understood as a human superhero film. As if Eastwood wanted to call out to us: Guys, what do you need Captain America when you have Captain Sully? "

- Julian Hanich : Spiegel Online

“But one can only admire Eastwood over and over again how he develops an unexpected arc of suspense from a story whose course and outcome every viewer knows. There's not much plot there. Therefore everything depends on how you deal with space and time, how you break the chronology, at what point in time you show the event, the spectacular landing, how obstacles and resistances are constructed that stand in the hero's way. "

“The retelling of the true events focuses entirely on the person of the captain, which gives the event a deeper dimension based on strength of character and the ability to make decisions. The exquisitely staged and played drama remains consistently exciting, not least because of the focus on the human component. "

Criticism of the representation of the NTSB investigators

In the USA it was criticized that the film made the investigators of the NTSB appear in too negative a light. In a promotional video that appeared before the film was released, Eastwood had accused the NTSB of trying to blame Sullenberger for the misfortune by trying to create the impression that he had acted wrong. Christine Negroni wrote in the New York Times that the tone and content of the investigation in the film did not correspond to historically documented processes. The investigators in the film failed to adhere to established procedures in accident investigations and would be portrayed as narrow-minded bureaucrats looking for a culprit.

While the NTSB presented simulations in the film that are supposed to show that it would have been possible to land the plane at an airport, chief investigator Robert Benzon explained the opposite in the real public hearing: “The simulations showed that one cannot assume with certainty was able to successfully return to LaGuardia or make an evasive landing at Teterboro Airport. ”Benzon protested against the portrayal in the film and said that the aim of the investigation was not to expose anyone.

“I don't know why the writer and director chose to skew the role of the NTSB. Your dealings with the NTSB went far beyond the limits of artistic freedom into the realm of malicious dishonesty. It is possible that the film has an overall negative effect on the safety of flight operations. Pilots involved in accidents will now assume that investigators will treat them harshly and unfairly. "

- Robert Benzon, NTSB chief investigator

Another former NTSB investigator was quoted as saying that he was concerned that the NTSB's cinematic portrayal could lead viewers to see their prejudices about the alleged incompetence of government agencies confirmed.

Tom Hanks told Associated Press that Sullenberger himself was dissatisfied with the portrayal of the investigation and, after reading an early script, asked not to give the characters the names of the real NTSB investigators. According to Hanks, Sullenberger said that the real investigators were not "prosecutors" and that it would not be fair to associate their names with the version of events depicted in the film.
