action

Thomas Highway, a Gunnery Sergeant in the US Marines and a veteran of the Korean War and especially the bloody Battle of Heartbreak Ridge , is due to train new recruits for the reconnaissance platoon shortly before his retirement . This is made more difficult by the fact that the soldiers do not take their role in the corps very seriously, since they have already been written off as an undisciplined bunch and walking targets for training the other units.

In order to whip up the troops, Highway uses unconventional and sometimes illegal methods, such as firing live ammunition from an AK-47 , to get the soldiers used to the characteristic sound of this weapon. In doing so, he repeatedly comes into conflict with Major Powers, who has no combat experience, but sees himself as vastly superior to the old veteran with the rules of "modern" warfare, who in his eyes is scrapped, and the loyal Staff Sergeant Webster from First Platoon , whose members consider themselves an elite unit. The young recruits also first try by all means to get Highway out of their lives, but it cannot be reduced. Only when they gradually win various maneuvers over the First Platoon under his leadership did he slowly gain their respect and loyalty.

Every now and then, Highway meets up with his ex-wife Aggie, whom he wants to win back. But during the Vietnam War , fear for his well-being drove Aggie away from Highway. It is difficult for both of them to find common ground for a resumption of their relationship: Highway with its hardened manner and Aggie with the desperation with which they had to live during the war.

Then one day the young marines start their first combat mission when a revolution takes place in Grenada and the US decides to intervene. The Highways reconnaissance platoon will be relocated there for combat operations as part of Operation Urgent Fury to evacuate US citizens. With improvisation and initiative the soldiers break the resistance of the opposing Cuban soldiers, and contrary to Major Powers' orders, highways men conquer a fortified height. Powers then wants to punish Highways' insubordination , but is prevented by Colonel Meyers, who praises Highway's improvisational talent and suggests Powers return to a logistics unit.

The soldiers return to the United States on the plane and are celebrated as heroes. Aggie is in the crowd welcoming the Marines home, and she and Highway quietly make a fresh start.

Reviews

Paul Attanasio wrote in the Washington Post on December 5, 1986 that viewers would want to see the films with Clint Eastwood because he embodied "the virility of an American". The film would offer just that. Most valuable is the scriptwriter's feeling for the slang of the US Marines. The lexicon of international films judged: “The description of a conservative" dinosaur "in modern America, only occasionally provided with thoughtful nuances and ironic refractions. Attempts at a differentiated analysis of the role of the military after Vietnam and Korea are being destroyed by the rude jargon and the mendacious end determined by militaristic ideology. "

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Sound . Lennie Niehaus won the BMI Film Music Award . Mario van Peebles won the Image Award for Best Supporting Actor .

background

  • Because a defenseless Cuban soldier is shot dead in the film, a war crime , the US Department of Defense requested that this scene be cut out.
  • The film was indexed from 1988 to 2013, but after the 25-year period had expired, the BPjM no longer considered it to be harmful to minors. After a re-examination, the FSK released the film uncut from the age of 16.
