action
Richard Jewell is a former police officer and has a huge gun collection. Now he works for a private security company and spends a lot of time at the shooting range. He lives with his mother Bobi.
On the evening of July 27, 1996, Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, home to the Olympic Games , received a warning about an impending bomb attack. When Jewell notices a suspicious backpack, he begins clearing the area. At first, Jewell is praised for acting quickly to prevent worse things from happening, but after his former boss calls the FBI and expresses his distrust of Jewell, the security guard's life is examined more closely. FBI man Tom Shaw is convinced that with Jewell he has the right man in his sights.
From that moment on, Jewell's life becomes hell. The FBI ransacked his home and the extensive weapons collection he found there reinforces the federal agency's belief that "he fits the profile" and that he could be a terrorist. The case is also reported every day in the media, which unjustly denigrates it. What he needs now is a good lawyer, but his low earnings only allow him to afford the young lawyer Watson Bryant.
After three months of attacks and hardships that Jewell and his mother endure, the FBI finally determines that he is innocent.
Template and background
The film is based on the article American Nightmare: The Ballad of Richard Jewell by Marie Brenner, which was published in Vanity Fair magazine in February 1997 . In her article, Brenner describes how security guard Richard Jewell prevented numerous injuries and possibly deaths by intervening in the bombing of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , but also the 88 days in which he was considered a suspect of the same. The FBI spent weeks investigating flawed theories, including one that Jewell was an angry homosexual cop-hater who was helped in the bombing by his lover. After Jewell was first celebrated as a hero by the media, they later presented him as a possible person in charge. Newspapers described him as a "fat, failed ex-deputy" or even compared him to serial killer Wayne Williams. Even after Jewell's discharge, the FBI did not feel responsible for correcting the public image of the real hero, and Jewell was thus the victim of an agency that tried to protect itself and cover up its investigative errors.
Jewell worked as a security guard for a private security company in the AT&T Pavilion during the Games at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. Jewell had graduated from the Northeast Georgia Police College as one of the best. On July 27, 1996, while working under the bank, Jewell discovered a green military-style backpack known as the Alice Backpack, alerted the police and, along with Tom Davis, helped evacuate people in a larger area around the backpack. At that time, three experienced investigators with leadership experience were available in Atlanta to be responsible for the subsequent investigation of the case. Tom Fuentes had helped bring down John Gotti , Barry Mawn had been a deep dive into an organized crime investigation, and Robin Montgomery was chief of the Critical Incident Unit at Quantico. In the early hours of the morning, FBI agents arrested several suspects after the FBI classified the bombing as a terrorist act. Furthermore, David Tubbs of Division 5 as spokesman for the investigative force and Woody Johnson, Special Agent in Charge (SAC), were sent to Atlanta.
On the afternoon of July 30, 1996, Jewell received a visit from Don Johnson and Diader Rosario of the FBI, who presented him with a search warrant. Believing this would prove that he had nothing to do with the attack, Jewell spent seven hours on the stairs of his house where he lived with his mother, as he was not allowed to be in the apartment during the search. The search warrant listed about 200 items that the FBI was able to confiscate, including magazines, books and photographs, as well as information such as telephone numbers and addresses of people who could be connected to the manufacture, transport and detonation of the pipe bomb.
Watson Bryant took over the legal representation of Jewell. He also took on Jewell's defense to the media and was invited by Larry King for an interview at the CNN studio. Jewell himself was not only besieged by journalists in the following weeks, but also monitored by FBI agents, which is why he and his mother wrote each other messages on pieces of paper when they wanted to talk about something no third party should overhear. During a later conversation with Johnson and Rosario at FBI headquarters in Buckhead, Jewell was asked to waive his rights, which worried him when he discovered he was still their suspect. When he got home from FBI headquarters that evening, Tom Brokaw, his mother's favorite editor, commented on the possible arrest and prosecution of Jewell in a special on the NBC Olympics , speaking of her son as a killer.
On October 28, 1996, after the allegations against Jewell were dropped and a few hours before a scheduled press conference at which her client would be able to speak freely and publicly about the allegations for the first time, his lawyers announced that they were filing claims for damages against NBC and others because its reputation would be forever damaged and there may always be a subtle doubt about its innocence for many people in the US. Commented Jewell, “For the first three days I was supposed to be her hero - the person who saved lives. […] Now I am the suspect of the bomb attack in the Olympic Park. ”Richard Jewell died on August 29, 2007 at the age of 44 as a result of his numerous health problems.

Age rating
In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12. The statement of reasons for the release states that news pictures and several times pictures of the bomb explosion corresponded with the oppressive story. The production is very cautious about it, but these aspects could emotionally overwhelm children under the age of 12.
Reviews and grossing results
The film convinced 76 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 6.8 out of a possible 10 points.
Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter writes in his review that the film's format and focus are closely intertwined with Clint Eastwood's 2016 aviation drama Sully , which also centered on a man who became a hero through his work, but whose actions were similar Were dismantled, albeit to a lesser extent, by authorities, the press and the public. The balanced script devotes just enough time at the beginning to get an impression of Richard Jewell as a loser and an outcast to arouse suspicions that he might be a ticking bomb just waiting to go off, according to McCarthy. The film loses a bit of its power on the last stretch, but the main actors are all ideally cast and seemed to be made for their roles, Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm in roles that made it clear that one shouldn't try to stop them, Kathy Bates in the mother role with loving shades that go far beyond what is in the script. But it is Paul Walter Hauser who carries the film, so McCarthy.
Patrick Heidmann from epd Film writes, so straightforward and straightforward, focused on the essentials and grippingly staged, especially in the first half, like The Richard Jewell Case are not many films these days. Rockwell , Bates and especially Hauser were convincing all along the line. The fact that Eastwood shows the real, now deceased journalist Kathy Scruggs as completely dishonorable and uses the ugly cliché “female reporter exchanges sex for information”, rightly got him anger, which he harmed the film in unnecessary ways.
The film critic Antje Wessels sums up, The Richard Jewell case is an unexciting study of a media hunt, at the end of which there are no winners. Hauser puts all his heart and soul into the at first glance so dodgy Richard Jewell figure and alternates completely authentically between self-pity, unpleasant thirst for power and a loner who is battered by fate and who has no social contacts due to his stature and his unkempt appearance.
Dieter Oßwald from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater reminds Hauser a bit of Oliver Hardy in his first leading role . Oßwald also explains that Eastwood is cautious, develops his drama without frills and also has finesse ready. For example, he stages the hidden bomb with relish with classic suspense and lets it explode again in a dream.
The German Film and Media Review sided The case Richard Jewell with the predicate particularly valuable . The jury's reasoning stated that all roles were perfectly cast and that Eastwood was telling the story with the unadorned realism he was used to, which turned the film into a socio-political lesson and a touching emotional cinema at the same time.
The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings so far amounts to approximately 43.75 million US dollars.
