Alan Robert Murray

Alan Robert Murray is a sound engineer who has won two Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing .

Life

Murray began working in film in the late 1970s when he was involved in sound and sound effects editing for the films American Hot Wax , The Clone Master and Oliver's Story in 1978 . A year later he took over the sound editing for the first part of the Star Trek film series. In 1986, after numerous other films, he was nominated for the first time for an Oscar in the category " Best Sound Editing " for his work on the fantasy film Der Tag des Falken . 1989 followed the biopic Bird with Forest Whitaker in the lead role, for which he received a nomination for the BAFTA Award , as well as 1993 for his participation in the film Merciless . In the meantime he worked on the action film Lethal Weapon , among other things , for the sequel Brennpunkt LA he received his second Oscar nomination for best sound editing in 1990. This was followed by two further nominations in 1997 for Eraser and 2001 for Space Cowboys , before he was nominated twice for an Oscar in 2007 with his work on Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima and he and Bub Asman for Letters from Iwo Jima won. At the same time he received the Golden Reel Award of the Motion Picture Sound Editors in two categories for the sound editing in this film .

In 2001 he was involved in the action film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider , in 2002 he was given the opportunity to work again on a Star Trek film and took over the sound editing for Star Trek: Nemesis once again. In addition to these engagements, Murray has worked regularly on Clint Eastwood films since the beginning of the 21st century , including, in addition to his Oscar success, Space Cowboys , Mystic River , Million Dollar Baby , Gran Torino , The Stranger Son , Invictus , J. Edgar , Back in the Game and Jersey Boys . For his work on the war film American Sniper , also shot by Eastwood , Murray received his second Oscar in 2015, the following year the thriller Sicario by Denis Villeneuve received an Oscar nomination, as the trophy went to Mad Max: Fury Road . In the years that followed, Murray continued to work with well-known directors, such as in 2016 with Villeneuve on Arrival and 2017 with Eastwood on Sully , for whom he received another Oscar nomination. In 2020 he received his tenth Academy Award nomination for his work on Todd Phillips ' comic adaptation Joker , making Murray the most nominated sound engineer in the category of best sound editing .

Private life

Murray is the father of Blu Murray and twins Kevin and Hailey Murray. The latter has already worked on the television series Date My Mom and Starting Over and worked as a production assistant on various film productions.
