Tom Stark works as a train driver. His wife Megan has cancer and doesn't have much longer to live. Since Tom cannot deal with his wife's diagnosis, he flees to work. Megan wants to spend as much time as possible with Tom before she dies, but Tom avoids her in order not to have to deal with the death of his wife. This puts their marriage in crisis.
Laura Danner, the single mother of ten year old Davey, suffers from depression and decides to commit suicide. To do this, she drives to a railroad crossing in her car with the unsuspecting Davey. Davey, who is impressed with trains, thinks his mother only wants to take him to watch the trains go by. But when a train finally approaches, she drives the car onto the rails. Davey panics and tries desperately to pull his mother out of the car. He does not succeed and Davey, who leaves the car at the last moment, has to watch as the train pulls the car with it and kills his mother.
The train driver on this train is Tom Stark. He can see Laura Danner's car on the tracks from afar. He has to decide in a matter of seconds whether he should apply the train's emergency brake and thus run the risk of the train derailing and endangering the lives of all passengers, or whether to slow down the train and possibly stop in time. He decides to slow down the train, but the speed is still too high and so he pulls Laura Danner's car with him.
Davey, who blames Tom for his mother's death, is placed with a foster mother. He doesn't feel well there and flees after a short time. He locates Tom to confront him. Megan can calm the boy down and since Davey doesn't want to go back to his foster mother, Megan and Tom keep him with them. At first, the relationship between Tom and Davey is still very tense, but through their shared passion for trains, the two eventually get closer. In the following time the three live together like a family.
When Megan finally dies of her illness, the world collapses for Tom and Davey, but in the end this stroke of fate welds them even closer together and the two look confidently into the future.
Reviews
Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine on September 3, 2007 that the film was " low key ," " thoughtful, " and " shamelessly old-fashioned ." He handled the emotional crises in a largely predictable way. Alison Eastwood's direction is " capable " but " undemanding ". The plot appears as if it was set in the 1950s. McCarthy also criticized the dialogues and character of Davey Danner for not acting like someone who had just lost his mother.
