Kathryn Joosten
Kathryn Joosten (born December 20, 1939 in Eustis , Florida , † June 2, 2012 in Westlake Village , California as Kathryn Rausch ) was an American actress of Dutch descent, best known for the television series Desperate Housewives , which featured her two Emmys as well as another posthumous nomination.
Life
Kathryn Joosten first worked as a psychiatric nurse at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago . During her work she met her future husband, a psychiatrist. She moved with him to Lake Forest, Illinois , where she became the mother of two sons. In 1980, Joosten divorced her alcoholic husband and pursued her previous career aspiration to be an actress at the Lake Forest Community Theater. As a single mother, she earned her living doing odd jobs (painting and wallpapering) in her neighborhood and as a saleswoman. After success at the community theater, Joosten moved to a theater in Chicago as a member of the ensemble. At the end of 1995, Joosten moved to Hollywood . Without an agent, she got her first small guest role in the series All Under One Roof after five months , which was followed by larger and larger roles on American television over the years.
Joosten was best known as Secretary to Mrs. Landingham through the NBC drama The West Wing . Through numerous guest appearances in various US series, such as Gilmore Girls , Scrubs - The Beginners , Grey's Anatomy , Everwood or Charmed - Zauberöse Hexen , she became more and more famous in Germany . Her most prominent role was that of Karen McCluskey in the drama series Desperate Housewives , which she held from 2005 until the end of the series. This achievement earned Joosten two Emmys and she received another Emmy nomination for best guest actress in a series posthumously after her death .
Joosten was a smoker for 45 years. In 2001 she was diagnosed with lung cancer. After two treatments in 2001 and 2009 had initially shown success, the cancer spread again; she died of the disease on June 2, 2012 in Westlake Village, California. Her last role played was Karen McCluskey in Desperate Housewives , in which she died of lung cancer in the last episode of the series. In her last few years, Joosten was decidedly against portraying smokers in film productions and also advocated sending warnings.
