The MFWE T II railcar belongs to a series of the first railcars of the Deutsche Werke Kiel and was created in 1922. It served as a demonstration car for three years and was sold to the Mecklenburgische Friedrich-Wilhelm-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (MFWE) in 1925 . There he got the number II .

In 1942 it entered the inventory of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) as the 749 , remained with the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR and was retired after 1950.

The railcar corresponded to the vehicles that were colloquially known as shrews or submarines .

history

A whole series of narrow-gauge and standard-gauge vehicles were created from this type of railcar at the DWK . Their design features were:

  • single-engine machinery
  • All-steel car body with triangular car ends
  • Bogie construction
  • Roof cooling system.

The car body was made in a later model with a trapezoidal design. A copy of this version also came to the DR. It was given the designation DR 750 . All DWK railcars were delivered in different types with different gauges, lengths and engine powers. Several engines were available, of which the MFWE T II received one with 81 kW (110 PS).

The T II railcar was first shown at the Railway Technical Exhibition in Seddin in 1924 and was subjected to numerous tests. It was considered a DWK Type IV railcar. At the time of takeover, the vehicle was already technically out of date and only cost 27,000 Reichsmarks , roughly half its value.

The vehicle was to be given the designation VT 86 903 after 1946 . There was no redrawing. In May 1950 the vehicle was parked in the RAW Wittenberge. Today only photos and a model remind of one of the very first motorized railcars in Germany.

Constructive features

There is no longer any reliable information about the technical details. What is certain is that the machine support frame of the 749 was suspended directly from the car body, thus relieving the load on the drive axles. Later designs also provided for the machine support frame to be placed on the bogies. Both designs had the feature that the machine system was freely accessible after the car body was lifted off, which made maintenance much easier. The car body was made of all-steel construction as a rivet construction and had the typical shrew face . It was supported by coil springs on the weighing beams of the bogies.

The gasoline engine transferred its power to a four-speed gearbox via a dry clutch , which was operated by foot. This four-speed gearbox was mechanically switched with gear shifts. The inner wheel sets of each bogie were driven by the transmission via cardan shafts and axle drives. The wheel sets were stored in roller bearings.
