Verna Bloom

Verna Bloom (born August 7, 1938 in Lynn , Massachusetts - † January 9, 2019 in Bar Harbor , Maine ) was an American actress .

Life

Bloom attended Boston University and completed her art studies with a bachelor's degree in 1959 . She then took acting lessons in New York with Uta Hagen and Herbert Bergdorf and had her first engagement on Broadway in 1967 . Her film career began at the end of the 1960s , she played the leading female role in Medium Cool alongside Robert Forster in 1969 , and in 1971 she played alongside Peter Fonda and Warren Oates in the western Der Weite Ritt .

She played one of her most important roles in 1973 in Clint Eastwood's A Stranger Without a Name . She played the wife of University Dean Wormer in the most commercially successful comedy film of the 1970s, I think a horse kicks me ( National Lampoons Animal House ) . Her last major film role was the portrayal of the Virgin Mary in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, since then she has only appeared irregularly in television series such as Der Equalizer (1988/1989), Dr. Quinn - A Passionate Doctor (1993) and The West Wing - In the Center of Power (2003).

Verna Bloom was married to film critic and screenwriter Jay Cocks since 1972 . She died in January 2019 at the age of 80 from complications from her dementia.
