Gloria Lasso (2003)

Gloria Lasso (actually Rosa Coscolin Figueras , born October 25, 1922 in Vilafranca del Penedès , Barcelona , † December 4, 2005 in Cuernavaca , Mexico ) was a Spanish - French singer of romantic ballads.

Life

Her voice was bright and powerful, but also lyrical. Because of her trilling technique she was called un Rossignol Madrilène ( a nightingale from Madrid , which does not match her Catalan origins). Jean Cocteau gave her the title l'aigle de la chanson ( Eagle of the Chanson ).

The zenith of her career in Europe was between 1955 and 1962, during which time she held many tours and her songs were regularly at the top of the French charts. Her almost 400 long-playing records were u. a. published in Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the USA, Mexico, many South American countries, but also in Japan. The singer Dalida was her strongest competitor.

Gloria Lasso's best-known songs include Étranger au paradis ( Stranger In Paradise by Tony Bennett ) - the first album in France that sold over a million copies - and Et maintenant (by Gilbert Bécaud ); Luna de miel (from Mikis Theodorakis ) is Spanish, while the Greek hit Les enfants du Pirée ( Never on Sunday from Sunday… nie! from Manos Hadjidakis ). She also sang in the Latin American style, e.g. B. Manhã de Carnaval from Orfeu Negro (by Luiz Bonfá ).

Her song Vénus (by Ed Marshall) was at the top of the French charts for five weeks in 1959. With the album Le Tour de Chant de Gloria Lasso à l'Olympia , she reached the top spot in sales for one month in 1956. It received twelve gold records in France, platinum in Mexico and the rare diamond record in the USA.

In the early 1960s, Gloria Lasso moved to the vicinity of Cuernavaca, Mexico, and received Mexican citizenship. In Central and South America she celebrated further successes. She returned to Paris in 1985 for a comeback at the Olympia . In Cuernavaca she died of a heart attack on December 4, 2005, a few days after her concert to celebrate her 50th stage anniversary in November 2005, which was her last. Her urn grave is in the local Catedral de la Asunción de María .

From her six marriages she had three daughters, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Since the mid-1990s, her great successes have also been published on CD.
