Dead Ahead is a concert documentary by the band Grateful Dead .

history

In September and October 1980, Grateful Dead went on tour to mark its fifteenth birthday. During this tour, the band made fifteen appearances at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco , two at the New Orleans Saenger Theater in New Orleans and eight at Radio City Music Hall in New York City . Each performance was divided into three parts; one part was acoustic and two parts were electric.

The concert was recorded on October 30th and 31st, 1980 at Radio City Music Hall and first released in 1981 as VHS and Laserdisc, before the recording was reissued on DVD in 2005. In addition to the original material, the DVD also contains bonus tracks.

In addition, next to the concert recording two were live - double albums called Dead Set and Reckoning published. Only the acoustic songs were published on Reckoning and only the electrical songs on Dead Set . In contrast, Dead Ahead includes both acoustic and electrical recordings.

Although the video is shorter in time than one of the performances and cut from two performances together, it has the same structure as one of the shows. The concert started with acoustic songs, which slowly led to increasingly electrically underlined songs, including solos by the drummer and free improvisation phases by the musicians, which were often deleted from the albums.

In addition to the Grateful Dead, the concert recording also features comedy duo Al Franken and Tom Davis. They made an appearance on the final day of the tour, which was also broadcast on radio and TV.
