Jesse Fuller

Jesse "Lone Cat" Fuller (born March 12, 1896 in Jonesboro near Atlanta , Georgia , USA ; † January 29, 1976 in Oakland , California ) was an African-American blues musician.

He is best known for his song "San Francisco Bay Blues", which was played by a large number of musicians, so u. a. by The Blues Band , Eric Clapton , Bob Dylan , Ramblin 'Jack Elliott , Richie Havens , Hot Tuna , Janis Joplin , Mungo Jerry and Peter, Paul & Mary . The Grateful Dead also covered some of his pieces. The first song on Bob Dylan's first LP, released in 1962, is Jesse Fuller's song "You're No Good".

Because he played a 12-string guitar , harmonica or kazoo , hi-hat and a self-made bass instrument, the 'Fotdella', at the same time , it was also referred to as a 'one-man-band' .

It was not until 1955 that his first record, recorded in 1954, was released, a 10-inch LP on the World Song label . This was followed by recordings for various companies such as Good Time Jazz , Prestige , Bluesville , Folk Lyric , Topic , Fontana and Arhoolie . He toured extensively in the 1960s and early 1970s . He played at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival , in Europe, and made regular appearances in colleges , coffee houses and other scene venues. His repertoire included not only blues pieces , but also traditional folk songs , ragtime numbers and religious songs .
