Jonesboro is a city and also the county seat of Clayton County in the US state of Georgia with 4724 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Jonesboro is about 10 km south of Atlanta .
history
Before the construction of the railway line leading through the place, the place was called Leaksville , was then renamed in 1845 in honor of Colonel Samuel Goode Jones who participated in the construction of the railway line in Jonesborough , who had new roads built in the place. The city was later given its simplified current name.
The railway line was initially built by the Monroe Railroad and Banking Company , but they did not complete the line to Atlanta . Only the subsequent Macon and Western Railroad Company was able to complete the work in 1846.
The city played a major role during the Atlanta campaign from May to September 1864, as the Battle of Jonesborough took place here from August 31 to September 1, 1864.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 4724 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 1181 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.50 people per household. There are a total of 1399 households.
65.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.10 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 35.9% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 24.6% of all households.
21.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 39.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 60.7% of the population were male and 39.3% were female.
35.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 58.2% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 2.1% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 7.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 31,343 USD , while 34.3% of the population lived below the poverty line.
