Steal Your Face is a live - double album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The album consists of appearances at the Winterland Music Theater in San Francisco from October 16 to October 20, 1974 and was released on June 26, 1976. After this tour, the band went on an almost two-year hiatus, which was only ended with the release of the album Blues for Allah in September 1975.

The name of the album Steal Your Face is based on the song " He's Gone " from the album Europe '72 . Inside the song there is the line: " Like I told ya, what I said, steal your face right off your head ". The song itself is based on an event that occurred in 1970 during the recording of the Workingman's Dead album . Lenny Hart , the father of drummer Mickey Hart, embezzled $ 155,000 and disappeared without a trace. Since then, the song has often been played when someone close to the band died.

Not only the music journalist Robert Christgau, but also the Deadheads (fan base of the Grateful Dead) considered this album the worst live album of the band. The recording quality was poor and many songs were overdubbed . The setlist was also questioned, especially jamming and improvising was missed. That's why the album was also called " Steal Your Money " by fans . The band defended the song selection by stating that most of the "jam songs" could already be heard on the other live albums and that they wanted to play studio songs.

The band wasn't happy with the album either. Jerry Garcia said in an interview that nobody in the band liked it, even Phil Lesh and Owsley Stanley didn't like it very much. The reason he gave was that they had not worked (on) and therefore had nothing else to offer.

Due to the poor quality and the negative criticism, the album was not used for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) by Rhino Records in 2004, where otherwise every studio and live album was reissued in a revised version from this time. Instead, a 5-CD box was sold as the soundtrack for The Grateful Dead Movie 2004 under its own label Grateful Dead Records . The documentary The Grateful Dead Movie was also made in 1974 at the Musiktheater Winterland, so the soundtrack and Steal Your Face contain the same songs, with the soundtrack containing a total of 44 songs and getting better reviews and sales. It was not until 2005 that Rhino Records brought a version of Steal Your Face, greatly improved in quality, to the market without bonus material.

successes

The album reached number 56 on the Billboard charts .
