The Winterland Ballroom was a musical theater in San Francisco , California between 1967 and 1978 .

The architecturally unaffected building was erected shortly after the severe earthquake of 1906 on the corner of Post Street and Steiner Street. The hall was originally an ice rink, where the Ice Follies games were played.

In 1967 impresario Bill Graham took over the Winterland and converted it into a music theater for around 5400 guests. The Fillmore Auditorium, also operated by Graham , no longer had enough capacity for its events. In the course of the following twelve years, numerous concerts by rock greats took place in the Winterland Ballroom . a. played here The Rolling Stones , The Who , Jimi Hendrix , Kiss , Sex Pistols , Ramones , The Band (they gave here on November 25, 1976 her farewell concert The Last Waltz ), Bruce Springsteen and the Grateful Dead , who gave here 59 concerts.

Despite or because of its permanent use as an event hall, the building steadily fell into disrepair. In 1978 it became clear that an extensive renovation of the building was necessary to keep the concert going. Then Graham decided to close the musical theater at the end of the year. The farewell concert took place on December 31, 1978. It played New Riders of the Purple Sage , The Blues Brothers , and after the New Year Grateful Dead with John Cipollina as a guest.

In 1985 the building was demolished. Today there is a house with rental apartments in the same place.
