history

St. Laurentius Church Leulitz

The main town Bennewitz is one of the oldest settlements in the Muldenaue. Bennewitz was first mentioned in a document in 1335. It was probably named after the Sorbian locator Bono or Bonislaw, who settled here around 1200 years ago after the Germanic settlers had left their homes during the migration . In terms of its layout, the village is a typical Sorbian round village .

Bennewitz was badly affected by the Elbe floods in 2002 . The cause was the railway bridge on the Leipzig – Dresden line, which runs over the Mulde near Bennewitz and which significantly reduces the cross-section of the Mulde bed there. The bridge acted as a dam and the water flowed off to the side. The Mulde looked for its old river bed through the middle of the village - favored by several dyke breaks in the area north of Schmölen and between the railway and road bridges.

Werner Moser (1938–2007, PDS ) was mayor of the community of Bennewitz from 1974 to 2006, before that from 1970 to the incorporation into Bennewitz, mayor of Pausitz, and thus also the longest serving mayor in Saxony.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1950, Bennewitz was incorporated with the districts of Deuben, Grubnitz, Mark Ottendorf and Schmölen to Wurzen . In 1974 Bennewitz and all its districts were spun off from Wurzen and re-established as a rural community of Bennewitz.
