It was first mentioned in 1421 as Altinbach with 14 inhabitants. The history of Altenbach is closely linked to that of Leulitz because it was almost always a branch village of Leulitz. 1529 Altenbach belonged to the Grimma office . In 1540 the place was sold by the landlord von der Planitz to the Count of Schönfeld. According to the state tax register, Altenbach burned down completely in 1661.

The village church was built around 1200 to 1250 in the Romanesque style . In front of the church there is a stone figure, the mourning woman. The old school (built in 1866), which was in operation until 1957, is located next to the church in Hauptstrasse. It is in very good condition and is now used as a residential building. The house is listed.

During the construction of the Leipzig - Dresden railway line, a large clay deposit and lignite were discovered near Altenbach . The brothers Gustav and Carl Harkort founded a pottery factory on Schwarzen Weg in 1845. In 1847 they sold it to Eugen Hülsmann , a nephew of Carl Harkort. As a result, more people settled in Altenbach than in the past. Altenbach became a workers' village. Its inhabitants consisted for the most part of workers from the aforementioned pottery factory, the Lübschützer Tonwerke and the Arnimschen clay and brickworks, pottery and kiln factory as well as lignite works. There were also farmers who spread over 14 small farms.

From then on things went up in Altenbach, which is also proven by the population figures. In 1834 there were 146, in 1871 there were already 318. Today, 938 people live in Altenbach. In 1849 an inn was built in the main street, which was demolished in 2010 due to its poor structural condition. The "Altenbach" stop on the Leipzig-Dresden railway line went into operation in 1913.

In November 1940 , 18 men founded the Altenbach volunteer fire department . In 2005 a new fire station was inaugurated.

On September 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Leulitz was incorporated. In 1994 Altenbach gave up the status of an independent community and is now part of the neighboring community of Bennewitz .

On March 1, 2015, a new bell was consecrated, which takes the place in the bell cage next to the remaining bell in the church, which has been orphaned since the Second World War due to the ordered bell delivery for war purposes . The new bell bears numerous symbolic decorations and the slogan “God of life, show us the way to justice and peace” - it was designed by artist Maria Ondrej . On May 2, 2015, the bell was rung for the first time at its home in the bell tower.
