The Leipziger Sportforum is a sports area northwest of downtown Leipzig . It is bounded by Jahnallee , Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and the Elster basin . Sometimes the term is used synonymously for the central stadium included.
Buildings
On the premises of the sports forum are:
- Today's Central Stadium ( Red Bull Arena ; for the original structure, see Central Stadium Leipzig (1956) )
- the arena Leipzig
- the Leipziger Festwiese
- the Sports Museum Leipzig (currently not open to the public)
- the swimming stadium (until 2004)
The swimming stadium, which was built in 1952 and then held 9,000 spectators, was demolished in 2004, only the north stand was preserved and structurally secured. It will be the new domicile of the sports museum. A hockey stadium, which was located south of the swimming stadium, was demolished in 2000.
There are also various training facilities and other sports facilities on the site, such as the northern athletics facility used by the Leipzig Olympic base and various clubs. The Leipzig Athletics Center (LAZ) is also located there.
The sports forum is owned by the city of Leipzig.
Directly to the south opposite the Sportforum is the extensive building and sports facility complex of the former German University for Physical Culture (DHfK), which has been used by the sports science faculty of the University of Leipzig since the university was dissolved after German reunification . To the west of the sports forum, on the opposite side of the Elster basin, are the grounds of the small Leipzig trade fair and other sports fields on the grounds of the planned training center for the RB Leipzig soccer club .
history
The stadium area at the Elster basin was built between 1954 and 1956 under the direction of Karl Souradny . The 23 meter high wall of the stadium was formed from many cubic meters of war rubble.
During the GDR era, gymnastics and sports festivals as well as national and international athletics competitions were held here.
In 1997 it was the place of the closing service of the Leipzig Church Congress .
In 2006 five World Cup matches were held here .
