Joachim Nicolas Eggert (born February 22, 1779 in Gingst on Rügen , at the time belonging to Swedish Pomerania ; † April 14, 1813 in Thomestorp , Östergötland , Sweden ) was a Swedish composer and conductor .

Eggert's ancestors were released from serfdom in 1773/1774 under Johann Gottlieb Picht ; his parents were the master shoemaker Johann Hindrich Eggert and his wife Barbara Maria Schinkel. As early as 1791 he received lessons in violin, piano and harp from the organist Johann Friedrich Dammas . In Stralsund he continued his studies in violin and composition with Friedrich Gregor Kahlow (* around 1756; † 1815) from 1794 to 1800 . This was followed by studies of music theory from 1800 to 1802 with Charles Louis Maucourt (* 1760; † probably 1825), Ferdinand Fischer and Friedrich Gottlieb Fleischer in Braunschweig and in 1802 in Göttingen with Johann Nikolaus Forkel .

In 1802 he got his first job as Kapellmeister at the Schwerin court theater, in the same year he left the court and went back to Gingst for almost a year. In mid-1803 he became a violinist in the Royal Court Orchestra of Sweden . The first composition commissions followed. In 1807 he was appointed a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music ; on May 14th of the same year he made his debut as a conductor in a concert with his own compositions. From 1808 to 1812 he was court conductor at the royal court orchestra. He died of tuberculosis in 1813 at the age of 34 .

His compositional work includes operas , cantatas , musical dramas and symphonies . He has also composed numerous commissioned works for the Swedish Court Orchestra. He introduced elements of Viennese classicism into the musical culture of Sweden. As part of his work as Kapellmeister, he took Beethoven's works into the concert repertoire of a Swedish orchestra for the first time. He also made a name for himself as the conductor of the premieres of Haydn's The Seasons and Mozart's Magic Flute in Sweden.
