The festival meadow is a large meadow in Leipzig .

location

The listed festival meadow is part of the Leipziger Sportforum , which is located west of the city center in the Zentrum-Nordwest district. To the north of it is today's central stadium , which was built into the wall of the old central stadium , to the east is the street “Am Sportforum”, on the east of which is the Leipzig Arena . Jahnallee runs to the south of the festival meadow and the Elster basin is adjacent to the west .

The site has an area of 41,000 square meters (around 200 by 200 meters) and can accommodate around 75,000 people. The 43 meter high bell tower on the northern edge of the festival meadow, which is named after Werner Seelenbinder , is striking and visible from afar.

history

On a city map from 1902, the meadow area is referred to as Ranstädter Viehweide, which is traversed by the normally dry flood basins of the Elster and crossed diagonally by a path to Leutzsch. About in the middle of Frankfurter Strasse (now Jahnalle) stood a group of houses, the Ratsziegelei. The half-timbered houses served until the 20th century as an "exodus house", in which the homeless were accommodated and which was attached to the poor institution.

The festival meadow was laid out in the second half of the 1930s on the meadow area, with part of the Leutzscher Weg also being built over. Originally, it extended north to the level of the imaginary extension of Wettiner Strasse. The at that time rectangular, in north-south direction much longer than today, was surrounded by a high earth wall that was only open to the south (to Frankfurter Strasse). The wall with breakthroughs still exists on the east and west sides.

On May 22, 1938, the facility, which in its original function as a festival and parade area was also known as the “Platz der 300,000”, was officially named “Adolf Hitler Field”. It was inaugurated on May 24th, 1938 on the occasion of the Saxon NSDAP Gauag.

When the central stadium was built in the mid-1950s, the northern half of the festival area was built over, so that it now has an almost square floor plan. A staircase was built into the new earth wall on the northern edge, which leads to the bell tower.

Events

The festival meadow is mainly used for large open-air concerts. Many international stars such as Depeche Mode , Michael Jackson , Bon Jovi , Guns n 'Roses , U2 , Linkin Park , Die Toten Hosen and the Rolling Stones Tina Turner gave concerts on the premises.

The Festwiese also experienced one of the two elimination competitions of the World Pyro Awards 2007. Every year, the Consumer Summer Festival starts on the Festwiese .
