Gymnastics and sports festival of the GDR
The GDR gymnastics and sports festival took place a total of eight times in Leipzig from 1954 to 1987 . Until 1963 as the "German Gymnastics and Sports Festival", it was part of the tradition of the 15 German Gymnastics Festivals held until 1933 and the two German Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Festivals .
The first German gymnastics and sports festival took place on the festival meadow next to the planned central stadium , in the Stadium of Peace and in the Bruno Plache Stadium . The 2nd DTSF moved into the new central stadium, which opened in 1956. As at all the following festivals, the main events took place here: a sports show organized as a sporting propaganda event , often an international football match, an international athletics event and a splendid closing event.
Since 1977 the children's and youth partakiades have been held in almost all district and district towns of the GDR at the same time , the Leipzig Spartakiade was always central.
