The City-Hochhaus Leipzig is located on the southwestern edge of Augustusplatz in Leipzig . The 34- storey high-rise is a landmark of the city and at 142.0 meters (total height with antenna support: 155.40 m) the tallest building in Leipzig . When it was completed in 1972, it was also the tallest building in Germany and, after the Jentower (144.5 m), is the second tallest in the new federal states .
On the 31st floor there is a viewing platform on the roof at a height of 120 meters . It provides a good overview of the Leipzig area and is therefore a popular tourist destination.
Due to the three long, slightly inwardly curved long sides with an elevated narrow side, the shape of the building from the street perspective can be interpreted as an open book. Because of its initial use by the University of Leipzig , the name Uniriese came into being in the vernacular .
history
Architect Hermann Henselmann , who shortly afterwards with the planning for the Zeiss tower in Jena (now Jentower is enabled), designed as part of the redevelopment of the campus of the University of Leipzig in the former Karl-Marx-Platz (since October 1990 Augustusplatz) the characteristic University high-rise, construction of which began in 1968. After reunification , the university began considering selling the building in 1994, as the estimated renovation costs of 240 to 300 million DM were considerable. Only four years later, in May 1998, the rectorate of the university finally decided to move out of the high-rise. The sales efforts failed for several years and in the years 1999 to 2002 the former university high-rise was finally completely renovated, the facade was clad with granite and glass.
Since 2006, various companies have rented the office space in the high-rise.
The building was sold in March 2007 by the Saxon state government ( Milbradt II cabinet ) to the US investment bank Merrill Lynch , represented by CRE Resolution GmbH . At the end of 2016, the building was shown in the financial report of Aroundtown Property Holdings .
The tenants include Leipziger Tourismus und Marketing GmbH, MDR and the panorama restaurant “Panorama Tower - Plate of Art” at a height of 110 meters on the 29th floor. The European electricity and energy exchange EEX has had its headquarters in the city high-rise since March 2008 . In early 2015, she installed illuminated advertisements on the southwest and northwest sides of the building.
