Maude Barlow
Maude Barlow (born May 24, 1947 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian publicist and activist .
Life
After activities in the feminist movement , in 1983 she became the Canadian Prime Minister's (then Pierre Trudeau ) first " adviser on women's issues" . Some time after a change of government, she gave up her job in government and in 1988 became chair of the left-wing Council of Canadians , Canada's largest civil rights movement . At the end of the 1990s, together with other forces in civil society, it campaigned against the multilateral investment agreement (MAI) planned by the OECD , which was also criticized by many developing countries as a new form of colonization. The OECD dropped the plan, but the WTO wants to achieve something similar with the GATS treaty package .
Another focus of her work is criticism of the Pan-American free trade agreement (except for Cuba ) FTAA . Here, too, she criticizes the fact that large corporations are favored over the population and small countries in non-transparent negotiations.
Barlow is also a board member of the International Forum on Globalization and co-founder of the Blue Planet Project environmental movement , which aims to protect drinking water from the "threats of trade and privatization."
She stepped next to Michael Moore u. a. in the 2003 Canadian documentary The Corporation .
Maude Barlow is second married to Andrew Davis in Ottawa . So far she has published about ten books on the subjects of globalization, privatization, education, media and environmental protection.
