The Central German Marathon (MDM) is a major sporting event that is held near Halle (Saale) . The marathon route connects Leipzig and Halle. The Central German Marathon is one of the few races that are completed between two cities. This reflects the character of the classic run from marathon to Athens in ancient Greece .

A historical forerunner of the Central German Marathon are the first German championships in the marathon on September 6, 1925; the route led from the sports field of SV Halle 98 via Ammendorf , Schkeuditz , through Leipzig center and past the Völkerschlachtdenkmal to the VfB stadium in Leipzig- Probstheida . The idea of running from Halle to Leipzig was revived with the 2002 marathon.

In addition to the marathon route, various shorter routes are also offered, which take place as a circuit in the area of the city of Halle. These runs are also based on a long tradition: On September 21, 1919, the first city run in Halle (“Across Halle”) took place.

The initiator is the two-time Olympic marathon champion Waldemar Cierpinski . One motivation was the support of the city of Leipzig's application to host the 2012 Summer Olympics . Accordingly, it was ambitious at the first races scheduled: top runners were committed, the Marathon "from Handel to Bach " was launched on the Riebeckplatz in Halle, the half-marathon for runners and inline skaters started on the south runway of the Leipzig / Halle Airport , the The goal was in front of the Leipzig Central Stadium . The 2004 run was timed to coincide exactly with the Athens Olympic Marathon . These high standards and ambitions could not be maintained and the focus shifted to Halle: Halle has been the marathon destination and venue for all shorter routes since 2005, Leipzig was not touched at all from 2007 to 2015 (at that time Halle was also the starting point for the marathon) . Since 2016 the marathon has been running again from Leipzig to Halle, but no longer as a road but as a landscape marathon.

In 2020, the run was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

stretch

The marathons from 2002–2004 led as a road marathon from Halle to Leipzig, 2005 and 2006 vice versa. From 2007 to 2015 they only ran in or near Halle. Since 2016, the run from Leipzig to Halle has been running on hiking trails parallel to the Neuen Luppe and Weißen Elster .

In addition to the marathon route, a half marathon , a 10 km run and a tenth marathon are offered for runners . Another highlight are different relays on which the marathon and quarter marathon distance is mastered as a team.
