Axel Koenders (born September 28, 1959 in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel ) is a former Dutch triathlete . He is a multiple national triathlon and winter triathlon champion (1983–1989) and two-time European long-distance triathlon champion (1987, 1989)

Career

In the 1980s, Axel Koenders was one of the strongest triathletes from the Netherlands .

Axel Koenders was a multiple Dutch champion in the long distance triathlon (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989) and also in the winter triathlon he was national champion several times (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987).

In 1987 Axel Koenders became vice European champion on the triathlon middle distance in Roth.
At the Ironman Europe in Roth in 1988 he set a new world record for the long distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42 km running) with his winning time of 8:13:11 h.

In 1987 and again in 1989 he was also European long-distance triathlon champion.

Between 1997 and 2007 he was a member of the Dutch Olympic Committee and served as an advisor at the 2000 Summer Olympics and the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics.
