Ouderkerk aan de Amstel ( German Ouderkerk an der Amstel ) is a village in the province of North Holland and belongs partly to the municipality of Ouder-Amstel and the western part at the confluence of the Bullewijk to Amstelveen .
The village is located south of Amsterdam and east of Amstelveen, on the northern border of the province of Utrecht . In 2017 Ouderkerk had 8,425 inhabitants. Of the 269 local businesses, 60 are active in agriculture. Most of the village is east of the Amstel in the municipality of Ouder-Amstel. The old village center of Ouderkerk has some sights. A church from the 18th century, the neo-Gothic Urbanus church from the 19th century (based on a design by Pierre Cuypers ) and the old Portuguese-Jewish cemetery Beth Haim with grave monuments that are unique in the Netherlands. It is believed that the castle of the Lords of Amstel ( Dutch : Heren van Amstel or van Aemstel) stood there, from which Amstelland and Amsterdam emerged. Ouderkerk is about 200 years older than Amsterdam. The Lords of Amstel were vassals of the Bishop of Utrecht and later of the Counts of Holland. North of Ouderkerk on the Ouderkerkerdeich stands the Polder Mill De Zwaan. To the south is the Ronde Hoep polder, a popular area for hikers and cyclists, and to the south-east is the Ouderkerkerplas recreational area .
