Ironman 70.3 California (or Ironman 70.3 Oceanside ) has been the name of a triathlon sporting event held at Oceanside (California) over a distance of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 13.1 km running since 2006 . From 2002 to 2005 this was organized over the same distance under the name Ralph's California Half-Ironman . From 2000 to 2001, the Isuzu Ironman California was held at the same location by the same organizer over twice the distance.

The triathlon is being organized today by the World Triathlon Corporation , a subsidiary of the Chinese Dalian Wanda Group , as part of its Ironman 70.3 triathlon series. The trademark Ironman 70.3 is derived from the total distance of the route of 70.3 miles (corresponding to 113 km).

organization

The initiator of Ironman California was the Canadian Graham Fraser, who took over the organization of Ironman Canada in 1996 . Fraser or his company Ironman North America (Iron Manna) had already in 1999 with the Ironman USA and Ironman Florida the second and third triathlon event on the North American mainland with the brand Ironman initiated in the event name. Fraser and Ironman North America paid fees to the WTC for the use of the trademark . In return, the top-placed amateurs and professional triathletes at Ironman California were able to purchase starting places for the Ironman Hawaii organized by the WTC .

Oceanside is located in San Diego County , where the two Americans Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan with 46 participants about 50 km on September 25, 1974 south of the lagoon Mission Bay , the world's first all-around event of swimming , cycling and Running under the name triathlon organized .

In 2002, the length of the Ironman California was halved to 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running and the event continued as Ralph’s California Half-Ironman , with starting places for the Ironman Hawaii being acquired by the fastest athletes could.

In 2006 the name of the event was changed to Ironman 70.3 California while the length of the route remained the same . Instead of starting places for the Ironman Hawaii, the fastest athletes could now acquire starting places for a triathlon initially organized by the WTC in Clearwater (Florida) , which was advertised under the name Ironman 70.3 World Championship . Formally, this is not a world championship awarded by an international sports association : The WTC derived the right to use the term World Championship from a trademark registered in 1981. In 2006 the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed that the validity of an agreement made in 1998 between the global umbrella organization ITU and the WTC also applies to their new trademark Ironman 70.3 .

After the WTC was taken over by a private equity company in 2008 , Fraser sold the US part of his company, which had since been renamed North American Sports , to the WTC in early 2009 . Since then, the event has been organized directly by the WTC.

The event originally planned for April 4, 2020 was postponed to October at the beginning of March as the coronavirus spreads .

Route

The swimming distance (1.9 km) extends over one lap in the port of Oceanside, the bike course with a total of around 830 meters in altitude over 90 km leads back to the port in one lap north of the harbor and the running course over two laps leads over two laps the boardwalk at Oceanside.

The course record for women was set by German Anne Haug in 4:12:03 h in 2018 , while the fastest time for men came from German Jan Frodeno in 2018 (3:45:05 h).
