Lionel Sanders (born February 22, 1988 in Harrow ) is a Canadian triathlete . He is a multiple Ironman winner (2014-2017), ITU world champion in the long distance triathlon (2017), runner-up in the Ironman Hawaii (2017) and is included in the best list of triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

After a difficult youth struggling with drugs, Lionel Sanders decided to change his life in 2009. He set himself the goal of starting an Ironman race (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) and successfully finished the Ironman Louisville in August 2010 .

In May 2011 he started at the Duathlon World Championship and finished 27th in Spain. After a few victories in the triathlon middle distance in 2014, he was one of the favorites at the world championship and he finished fourth in September.

In November 2014 he started his second start on the Ironman distance at Ironman Florida for the first time as a professional and the strong running Sanders was able to complete the race, which had to be carried out without the swimming distance due to the weather, with a marathon time of 2:44:12 h win. In November 2015, he achieved his second Ironman victory at Ironman Arizona and a personal best of 7:58:22 h on the long distance.

At the Ironman Arizona in November 2016, Lionel Sanders set a new course record with his winning time of 7:44:29 h and the fastest time ever achieved in an Ironman race. This time was undercut in May 2017 by the British Tim Don at the Ironman Brasil .

In April 2017, he was able to successfully defend his title from the previous year in California and achieve his 15th victory in an Ironman 70.3 race.

World Champion Long Distance Triathlon 2017

In August 2017 he won the title at the ITU World Championship on the long-distance triathlon. In October he finished second at his third start in Hawaii, after having been in the lead for a long time and being overtaken by eventual winner Patrick Lange just a few kilometers from the finish line .

In December 2019, he achieved a Canadian double success with Paula Findlay at the Challenge Daytona women.

Lionel Sanders lives with his partner in Hamilton, Ontario . He is trained by David Tilbury-Davis.
