Pucón is a city with about 14,000 inhabitants in the Región de la Araucanía in southern Chile .

geography

Pucón is about 110 km southeast of Temuco on the south bank of the 176 km² large and up to 165 m deep Lago Villarrica . The Lago Villarrica drains into the Río Toltén as a receiving water . South of the city is the 2840  m above sea level. NN high, active volcano Villarrica . The climate, with rainy winters, occasional snowfalls and moderate summers, is complementary to that of Germany with a shift of about 1/2 year .

history

In 1551 Pedro de Valdivia reached the area around Lago Villarrica without being able to gain a foothold there. From 1597 the Mapuche began to push back the Spanish invaders, who had to give up the area completely again in 1602.

It was not until almost 300 years later, on February 27, 1883 , that the war against the Mapuche ended. The first European settlers came to the Pucón area around 1899 . Between 1920 and 1930, tourist hotels began to be built in Pucón.

In the strong earthquake of May 22, 1960 , Lake Villarrica overflowed its banks and destroyed many houses near the shore.

economy

Tourism, along with fishing and forestry, is the main source of income in the Pucón region. In particular, the Lago Villarrica and the Villarrica volcano attract tourists. There are also thermal springs and the national parks east of the lake , the Villarrica National Park and the Huerquehue National Park .

The Ironman 70.3 Pucón - a half-distance triathlon (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running) will be held there in January .
