history
The areas in the area of the Río Toltén could never really be conquered by the Spanish conquistadors . The river forms the northern border of the area of the Huilliche , a tribe of the Mapuche . From 1604 to 1881 the Mapuche ruled here practically without restrictions after they had been recognized by the Spanish as sovereign. Only after the Chilean state took the indigenous settlement areas forcibly, the area south of Temuco could be repopulated by whites from 1883 onwards.
