Pitrufquén is a city in southern Chile and is located in the Región de la Araucanía . It has about 20,000 inhabitants (2004) including the surrounding area.

The name of the city comes from the Mapuche language , the Mapudungun, and means something like ash dust .

Geography and climate

The city is located about 30 km south of Temuco on the River Toltén . It is located on the Panamericana and is a transport hub for travelers to Villarrica and Pucón .

The climate is Mediterranean.

history

Settlement began in 1836 when the Kazike Felipe Paillalef gave land to 290 settlers. The extensive expansion of agriculture began in 1898. On May 3, 1903, Pitrufquén was officially founded.

Two versions of the origin of the name Pitrufquén are known. One says that the name is derived from pichi , "small" and lauquen , "sea". The other version says that the name comes from piti and truquen , which means "between ashes" or "much ashes".

Railway bridge over the Río Toltén

The Balneario Isla Municipal camping area is located on the Río Toltén . The landmark of Pitrufquén is the railway bridge over the Río Toltén . It crashed under a freight train on August 18, 2016.

economy

Tourism plays the most important economic role, along with sheep farming, forestry, industry and agriculture.

In Pitrufquén there is a production facility for the Surlat dairy. The wood processing company Molco SA is also located there.
