Marc Herremans (born December 19, 1973 in Merksem ) is a former Belgian triathlete .
Career
Marc Herremans was Belgian triathlon champion on the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) in 1998 and 1999 and in 2001 he finished sixth at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.
Accident in 2002
In 2002 he had a serious accident while cycling in Lanzarote and has been paraplegic ever since. Subsequently, however, he repeatedly started successfully in the triathlon on the Ironman distance - with his arm strength alone in the “hand bike” class. He was trained by Paul Van Den Bosch from Antwerp and he was ambitiously pursuing his goal of becoming Ironman World Champion - which he finally succeeded in 2006.
The "Marc Herremans Classics" in Antwerp were named after him until this triathlon competition was licensed as Ironman 70.3 in 2006 (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running).
Marc Herremans is also giving motivational lectures today.
