Manfred Putz (born July 24, 1969 in Grafendorf ; † June 19, 2015 in Buch-St. Magdalena ) was an Austrian handbiker .

Athletic career

In 1996 Manfred Putz, a trained carpenter , had a traffic accident and was subsequently paralyzed . From 2003 he was successful as a handbiker.

Between 2003 and 2011, Putz was Austrian national champion 15 times, nine-time individual winner of EHC races, world and European champion in the individual time trial (2007 and 2006, respectively). At the 2008 Summer Paralympics , he took fourth and fifth place. Among other things, he took part in the “Race around Slovenia”, the “Race around Austria” and the “ Race Across America ”, which he won in 2014 together with Thomas Frühwirth in the handbike category. Among other things, he set an endurance record over 1002 kilometers in the Atacama Desert in 42 hours and another in 84 hours over 1167 kilometers and 20,000 meters in altitude through the Alps .

On June 19, 2015, Manfred Putz collided with an approaching train locomotive during a training drive near his home town of Grafendorf, which he had apparently overlooked. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.
