Ironman 70.3 UK venues

The Ironman 70.3 UK is a triathlon sport event that will take place in Exmoor (Great Britain) from 2006 to 2017 .

organization

It is part of the Ironman 70.3 triathlon racing series of the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). Originally, these races over a distance of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running were organized by independent organizers under license from the WTC as the owner of the trademark rights. Since the purchase of the WTC by a private equity investor in 2008, the races have increasingly been organized directly by the WTC. The brand name is derived from the total distance of 113 km or 70.3 miles in a competition.

Already in 1991 and 1992 the WTC had awarded qualification places for the Ironman Hawaii via the "Ironbridge Triathlon" over the middle distance in Shropshire , later the British had to qualify outside of Great Britain in order to be able to start at the birthplace of the brand.

On September 9, 2001, BIG Triathlon Ltd. for the first time under license from the WTC the bluesure Half Ironman Triathlon Llanberis UK in Llanberis ( Wales ), with 30 qualification places for the Ironman Hawaii 2002 and with a total of 25,000 US $ the highest prize money in the history of the British triathlon. Although the event was named "Event of the Year" by the British Triathlon Association, after the event there were reports of high losses by the organizer, the website disappeared and even months later there was still no registration option. The WTC canceled the license agreement and concluded a new one with "Worldmasters Marketing", who will hold the event with the same concept on September 8, 2002 with 30 qualifying places for Hawaii 2003 and US $ 25,000 in prize money. The goal was announced to expand the event to one over the full Ironman distance.

In 2003, according to the WTC, based on a survey of participants, the venue was moved from Wales to Sherborne in southern England. Ron Thorne replaced Ron Bel l as race director.

In 2005, the length of the Half Ironman UK in Sherborne was doubled and the event continued under the name Ironman UK from August 21, 2005 . In May 2005, the organizer - meanwhile in Ironman UK Events Ltd. renamed - announced that registrations for a planned new event, which was initially announced under the previous name "Half Ironman UK" in Longleat . At the end of June 2005, the WTC introduced the new brand name "Ironman 70.3" for its license partners worldwide, and the first event under this new brand name was held in Longleat.

There were no more qualifying places for the Ironman Hawaii - instead there was a qualification opportunity for a likewise newly created event under the name "Ironman 70.3 World Championship". In the following year, the new event was relocated to Wimbleball Lake in Exmoor , Somerset , with the event date being moved from September to June at the same time.

The last competition took place here on June 26, 2017. In the last two races between 2015 and 2017, there were no professional athletes at the start. The race was not extended in 2018.
