Kuah city

Kuah is the district capital of Langkawi Island in the state of Kedah in northwest Malaysia . It is the entry point for anyone coming by ferry from either the mainland or the neighboring island of Penang . The city is built around the ferry terminal, which attracts larger tourist flows for Langkawi. Over the years, Kuah has become bigger and more interesting for visitors to Langkawi due to its tourist success.

The name 'Kuah' comes from the Malay for “stony”. Legend has it that the city arose on new land that arose from the battle of two giants with boulders.

Kuah has a wide range of hotels, but no holiday complexes because the city does not have a suitable beach. The nightlife of Kuah essentially consists of visiting restaurants, most of which specialize in seafood. However, there are also some bars and restaurants, most of which are located in hotels.

Kuah offers a number of options and attractions that make a stay interesting despite the lack of beach and nightlife. As an island capital, Kuah lives primarily from the shopping opportunities and restaurants, fast food offers and the craft shops that stretch to the horizon.

Attractions

While the city of Kuah itself is more of a shopping area, there are more attractions to visit around Kuah. Most of them are recreational parks and places where a friendly cooling wind blows from the sea.

Dataran Lang

Dataran Lang or 'Eagle Square' is a large monument in the shape of a white-tailed eagle flying off a rock. This huge, 12-meter-high statue greets visitors coming to Kuahs Ferry Terminal. The eagle is the symbol of Langkawi; the name “Langkawi” is derived from the Malay word for eagle. The square is designed with ponds, bridges and terraces, making it a pleasant place to stay to look out over the sea.

Taman Lagenda

Taman Lagenda or Lagenda Park is a recreation zone dedicated to Langkawi's legacy of fables and myths. The park covers an area of 50 hectares of newly reclaimed land and has something of an open-air museum, designed with many blooming flowers. Fruit trees stand along the paths and the ponds that adorn the park.

Within the flowering vegetation, the park has 17 sculptures that depict the many legends that entwine around Langkawi, such as the duel of the two giants that made Mat Cincang and the Raya Mountains, mythical birds and fairy tales of princesses. In addition, there are four man-made lakes and a specially created beach to complete the picturesque scene. The park is open from early morning until late at night and can be reached on foot from the ferry port.

CHOGM park

Another park in Kuah is the CHOGM park. It was built to commemorate the Commonwealth government meeting that took place in Malaysia in 1989. Langkawi was a retreat and recreation area for the government officials who attended the meeting. Even today, the park, which is loosely planted with trees, shows the flags of all participating nations, a good place to take a walk and rest.

Al-Hana mosque

Al-Hana Mosque 2007

The Al-Hana Mosque is one of the largest and most popular mosques on the island. It is in an easily accessible location in Kuah to hold Muslim celebrations as well as to receive visitors interested in its architecture. This majestic mosque features motifs and carvings from Uzbekistan along with traditional Malay elements. The mosque also has sentimental value to Langkawi because it was opened in 1959 by the first Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman .

Shopping

Langkawi has been declared a duty-free zone within Malaysia. The city of Kuah therefore has the highest concentration of shopping centers and shops selling duty-free goods and souvenirs. In particular, the duty-free offer results in drastically lower prices for all alcoholic beverages. Beer, for example, only costs one sixth of the mainland price.

Jetty Point Mall, ferry terminal shopping center

The Jetty Point Mall enjoys a strategic location as a separate part of the ferry terminal. This makes it a popular shopping opportunity for quick last-minute shopping before ferries leave for the mainland. In the shopping mall there are many shops and also fast food restaurants like KFC and Starbucks with free WiFi access.

Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall

The Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in Langkawi with more than 100 individual shops and supermarkets with department store departments. You can buy duty-free items, souvenirs, fashion, sports equipment and electronics here. Other options include quick service restaurants, currency exchange, and a tourist information desk.

Teow Soon Huat

Teow Soon Huat is a large duty-free shopping mall with over 40 stores, eight food vendors including a food gallery, department store and supermarket selling fresh, frozen and canned food. It is one of the most popular shopping areas in Kuah, although it is on the outskirts of Kuah Town. The market is family-oriented with household goods stores, electronics stores and tobacco, alcohol, fashion stores, suitcases, etc., all at duty-free prices. The service includes currency exchange and a tourist information desk. Langkawi's only cinema is located here on the 10th floor. There is sufficient parking space on several levels.

Saga Shopping Center

The Saga Shopping Center is another of the many shopping complexes established in Langkawi. It offers a wide range of housewares, as well as wine, beer, liquor, ready-to-wear, dried food and tobacco products at duty free prices. Toys, shoes, ceramic and crystal goods complete the offer.
