The Vienna Triathlon is a multi-day triathlon event that has been held annually on the Danube Island in the Austrian capital Vienna since 2002 . Until 2016 the races were held as the “Vienna City Triathlon” .

organization

This competition has already been held over four different distances:

  • Sprint distance (750 m swimming, 22 km cycling and 5 km running)
  • Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 36 km cycling and 10 km running); was already considered the Austrian state championship
  • Half distance (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 20 km running)
  • Long distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42 km running)

The first event was in 2002 and in 2003 and 2004 the national champions on the short distance were determined here. In 2014 the race had to be held as a duathlon due to the weather and the Olympic distance was canceled because no sponsor could be found.

Since 2017, the race on the Danube Island has been held as the “P3 Vienna Triathlon” over the sprint distance and the Olympic distance. Since 2017, the “King / Queen of Vienna” has been determined annually in the combined ranking of sprint and short distance. The next race is here on September 13, 2020.

Results

Sprint distance

The race has been held as the “Seat Mayer Sprint Distance” since 2017 (0.78 km swimming, 22.6 km cycling and 5 km running).

Olympic distance

Due to flooding, the swimming competition was moved to Kaiserwasser in 2013 and due to the distance to the transition area, the time for the transition was not included in the rating.

The Olympic distance was canceled for 2014 because no sponsor could be found. In 2015 the swimming distance was 1000 m and the bike course was 42 km long.

The last competition on the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 36 km cycling and 10 km running) took place on Vienna's Danube Island on September 9, 2018.

Half or middle distance

From 2005 to 2007 the competition was held under the name Viennaman over a distance of 2 km swimming, 82 km cycling and 20 km running.

The course record was set by the German Jürgen Stilgenbauer on May 29, 2010 with 3:53:51 hours and thus undercut the winning time of the Belgian Luc Van Lierde from the previous year by almost three minutes.

In 2014 the race had to be held as a duathlon due to the weather (5 km running, 66 km cycling and 20 km running).
Since 2015, there have been no more middle-distance competitions. The reason for this was structural changes in the area of the stone spur bridge, where, due to the new canoe center, the route previously used could no longer be used. An alternative route with nine laps on the Danube Island appeared to be unattractive.
