Maik Twelsiek (born December 25, 1980 in Lemgo ) is a former German triathlete . He is multiple Ironman winner (2007, 2009 and 2013) and is included in the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

After finishing school, Twelsiek first completed a two-year apprenticeship at Brinkmann in Herford as an industrial clerk. After his community service, he then enrolled at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo for the business degree. As a teenager, Twelsiek was initially active as a footballer in the local club, later he also played tennis.

Triathlon since 1999

His first triathlon, the Exter Triathlon , whose transition area was on his football field, aroused his interest in another sport. Since 1999 he has been concentrating entirely on his triathlon training. In 2000 Twelsiek won the German junior duathlon championships in Zeitz , and later he became the German U23 duathlon champion in Viernheim . In August 2006 he was the second best German and third overall behind Pete Jacobs and Enrico Knobloch, German runner-up in the middle distance at the Mönchshof Triathlon in Kulmbach .

Ironman winner 2007

Twelsiek finished his fourth race over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) in Wisconsin in September 2007 as the winner. With a time of 8:52:49 h he had over 10 minutes ahead of the American Paul Fritsche and was able to qualify for the Ironman Hawaii 2008, where he finished 14th.

“Maiki” or “Cat” was a member of the Commerzbank Triathlon Team , which was dissolved at the end of 2011 and sponsored by the two-time Ironman World Championship winner Normann Stadler and the Ironman European Championship winner Timo Bracht in Frankfurt . From 2012 he was a member of Faris Al-Sultan's Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team - until its dissolution in January 2013.

In September 2013 he won his third Ironman race with the Ironman Wisconsin . Maik Twelsiek has not appeared internationally since 2016.

Personal

Twelsiek is married to the US triathlete Hillary Biscay . The two live with her daughter in Tucson ( Arizona ).
