St. Benediktus (Düsseldorf)
The neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Church and former parish church of St. Benediktus in Düsseldorf-Heerdt is the only Benedictine patronage in the Archdiocese of Cologne . It refers to St. Benedict of Nursia , the saint of the Neuss Benedictine nuns , to whom Hof Heerdt belonged in the Middle Ages. On January 1, 2015, the parish of the same name merged with the other three Düsseldorf parishes on the left bank of the Rhine to form the new parish of St. Antonius and Benediktus .
history
Heerdt is the oldest of the districts on the left bank of the Rhine in Düsseldorf. The Heerdter Hof, which was in possession of the Neuss Quirinus pen, has been documented since 1100 . Around 1200 a church in the Romanesque style was built, the patronage of which also belonged to St. Quirinus. This church had to be demolished in 1843 because it was in disrepair.
Today's Benedict Church was built between 1844 and 1847. The plans came from the Krefeld city architect Heinrich Johann Freyse . The colored windows were installed at the end of the 19th century. After being damaged in World War II, they were replaced in the 1950s. The present organ dates from 1983.
architecture
St. Benediktus was one of the first churches on the Lower Rhine to be built in the neo-Gothic style. The church has a three-aisled hall based on the late Gothic church style of the 15th century. The Gothic vaults are bricked.
The high altar also follows the neo-Gothic style. The altarpiece is by Heinrich Lauenstein and shows Maria and Johannes under the cross. Parts of a pulpit from 1600 in the Renaissance style were built in.
In November 2006 a new clock with gold hands on a white, square background was installed on all four sides of the church tower.
organ
The organ was built in 1983 by the organ building company Freiburger Orgelbau Späth. The abrasive loading -instrument has 31 registers (including two preliminary moves and three transmissions) on two manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
