Iván Raña Fuentes (born June 10, 1979 in Ordes ) is a Spanish triathlete , three-time Olympian (2000, 2004 and 2008), aquathlon world champion (2001), two-time triathlon European champion (2002, 2003), triathlon world champion (2002) and Ironman winner (2012, 2014). He is listed in the best list of Spanish triathletes on the Ironman distance and leads the same.
Career
Iván Raña grew up with his four siblings in the Spanish province of A Coruña in the far north-west of Spain and he found his way to triathlon at the age of 15.
2000 Summer Olympics
In September 2000, the then 21-year-old started in Sydney at the Olympic Games in triathlon, where he finished fifth. In 2001 Iván Raña became aquathlon world champion and in 2002 world champion in the short distance triathlon. In 2002 he also became European triathlon champion and was able to successfully defend this title in 2003.
2004 Summer Olympics
In 2004 he reached the 23rd place at the Olympic Games in Greece.
2008 Summer Olympics
In 2008 he competed in Beijing for the third time at the Olympic Games, where he finished fifth again, as in 2000. In 2009 he started as a professional cyclist in the Xacobeo Galicia team . In November 2012 he won the first edition of the Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote .
Long distance triathlon since 2012
In November he started the long distance triathlon ( Ironman ) at Ironman Mexico for the first time and was able to win the race.
In July 2013, with his second place in Zurich, he qualified for a starting place at the Ironman Hawaii , where he finished sixth in October. In June 2014 in Klagenfurt he clinched his second victory in an Ironman race with the third fastest time ever on the long distance.
In October 2016, he finished ninth in Hawaii at the Ironman World Championships . He has been trained by Luc van Lierde since 2019 .
