The ITU World Championship Series 2020 (also World Triathlon Series , WTS) is a triathlon racing series with competitions over the Olympic distance and the sprint distance as well as a relay competition (mixed relay). It is held under the care of the International Triathlon Union (ITU). The winner of the series ranking will be honored as triathlon world champion.

organization

This world series has been held annually since 2009 under the watchful eye of the ITU, and from 1989 to 2008 the world champions were determined in a single competition.

At the Olympic distance , the competitions consist of 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running, while the sprint distance consists of 750 m swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km running. In elite competitions, drafting (cycling in the slipstream) is generally permitted . In the case of the popular sports competitions organized in the framework program, however, there is a drafting ban, i. H. every athlete must keep a distance of at least twelve meters from the athlete in front on the bike course.

In the 2020 season, six races and the final in Edmonton should take place in August. The first six planned races of the season, which should have taken place between March and July, had to be canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and replacement dates are not yet known. The final of the World Cup series in Edmonton , the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta , planned for August 17-23 , had to be canceled in April.

The 2020 world championship title on the short distance will be awarded as part of the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon on September 5th and the mixed team world championship titles will also be awarded in Hamburg on September 6th.

In addition to these eight races of the world series, the other races of the ITU World Cup are also taken into account for the annual ranking of the World Championship:

• The five best results of the world series, the last final race and a maximum of two World Cup races are taken into account for the annual ranking.
• At the final in Lausanne in August there are 1,200 points for a win and in the other eight races of the world series there are 800 points for a win.
• In a normal ITU World Cup, however, there are only 300 points. Every further placement in these races receives a fixed number of points.

qualification

Each national umbrella association can nominate up to six male and female athletes for each competition in the series, the host association up to eight. The notification must be made to the ITU at least 33 days before the competition.
Based on the placement of the registered athletes on the ITU Points List, the ITU compiles the starting fields of 60 male and 60 female athletes. In addition, five invitations can be issued. In contrast to the World Championship Ranking, the ITU Points List also includes other competitions such as B. U23 world championships, continental championships and cup events and student world championships.

Grand Final

After the race at the last venue of the season (Grand Final), the winner of the series classification will be honored as triathlon world champion.

As part of the Grand Final , the world champions in the U23 category on the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) and the junior world champions over the distances of 750 m swimming, 20 km cycling and 5 km run for sure.
