organization
Duathlon is an endurance sport consisting of an all-around competition between two disciplines: It consists of a running distance, a cycling stage and then again a running distance, which are played one after the other.
This duathlon competition event was launched in 1989 by the Swiss finance manager and sports official Urs Linsi together with Bruno Imfeld : At that time, Zofingen was a stage location for the Tour de Suisse . Both agreed to establish an international sports competition here.
The German Andreas Rudolph was the first winner in 1989 over the distances of 2.5 km running, 120 km cycling and 30.5 km running. In 1991 the bike course led over the Bodenberg for the first time .
In 1992 there was a name change from the previous name “Zofinger Run & Bike” - the event was now called “PowerWoman” for women and “PowerMan” for men.
The internationally successful and well-known winners of the following years, such as Kenny Souza , Scott Molina , Jürgen Zäck , Olaf Sabatschus , Mark Allen , Olivier Bernhard , Paula Newby-Fraser , Erin Baker and Lori Bowden , made the race very popular.
In 1993 the prize money in Zofingen even exceeded that of the Ironman Hawaii at 200,000 US dollars .
In 2000, triathlon was included in the program of the Summer Olympics, many athletes prefer the triathlon and the duathlon lost some of its importance. In 2002 the Powerman Zofingen was moved from May to September.
In 2009, after a nine-year break, the Duathlon World Championship on the long distance was held again by the ITU ( International Triathlon Union ) together with the IPA (International Powerman Association) as part of the Powerman Zofingen.
