Mandurah

Mandurah is a city in Australia , around 72 kilometers south of Perth city ​​center in the state of Western Australia . It lies on the Indian Ocean and is roughly on a par with Bunbury to the south , the second largest city in the state.

The city with 8,000 inhabitants is the center of the LGA City of Mandurah with over 80,000 inhabitants (2016). Mostly young families and retirees live in the area. Mandurah is a booming coastal city and part of the Perth conurbation that serves many Perths as a weekend getaway. Mandurah's greatest attraction for tourists and locals is its close proximity to the sea. The city is one of the fastest growing cities in Western Australia and one of the most popular tourist destinations. There is a cultural center that can assert itself internationally, a cinema center, spectacular waterways and a marina , restaurants, cafes and many guest rooms. 300,000 people live in Mandurah on long weekends - five times the normal population.

Since Christmas 2007, Mandurah has been connected to the rest of Perth by light rail ( Transperth ). The journey between Mandurah and Perth city center takes 50 minutes, and trains on the Mandurah Line usually run every 10 minutes. A free bus runs between Mandurah Train Station and the Visitor Center . This convenient connection to the rest of Perth should give Mandurah a further boost.

Coast and surroundings

The spectacular waterways of Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary (one of the largest aqueduct systems in Australia ) form the center of Mandurah. The city is located around the fresh water system. After a river bend, the water flows into the Indian Ocean . Mandurah is located on a long stretch of coast that consists mostly of sandy beaches. There are also some districts built around the man-made canal systems.

Mandurah extends over 173.5 km² and forms a narrow strip less than ten kilometers wide. It lies on the sand plain that borders the Darling Range . It is bordered by Rockingham to the north and Waroona to the south . It is flanked by the Indian Ocean to the west and by the Harvey Estuary and Pinjarra to the east .

Mandurah is the urban center of the Peel region , which also includes the Shires Boddington , Murray , Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Waroona .

climate

Mandurah has the same climate as the rest of Perth: warm summers and cool winters. During the summer (December to February) the average maximum temperature is 27 ° C; the average low temperature 19 ° C. It can get very hot in midsummer; in late summer temperatures often exceed 40 ° C. In winter (June to August) the maximum temperature is 15 ° C, the minimum temperature 9 ° C.

history

The Nyoongar (or Bibbulmun) people, who lived in the southwest of Western Australia, called the region “Mandjar” (German: meeting point ). After the colonization of the region by Europeans, the name changed to Mandurah ; this is likely due to incorrect pronunciation.

In December 1829 Thomas Peel arrived from the United Kingdom on the Gilmore ship with craftsmen, equipment and supplies . He financed the trip by swapping a land concession in the Swan River Colony . Unfortunately, the contract stipulated that he had to arrive before November 1, 1829; since he failed to do this, the state license expired. Not discouraged, Peel had a small settlement called Clarence built south of the Swan River Colony; today the place is known as Woodmans Point . Many problems with the settlement led him to lead the settlers to what is now known as Mandurah. Thomas Peel died in 1865, but Mandurah continued to grow, albeit very slowly.

On July 1, 1961, Mandurah, a former region administered by a number of different governments (most recently "Mandurah Road Board"), became the Mandurah Shire. The region was governed locally by a council of elected members under the Western Australian Local Government Act . Rapid growth in the last 50 years resulted in Mandurah on July 1, 1987, town status (Town of Mandurah) and finally on April 14, 1990, City status (City of Mandurah).

On December 3, 1989, the most famous Mandurian, Steve Richards, moved to Mandurah.
