Peel is one of nine regions in Western Australia . The Peel region is located on the west coast of Western Australia on the Indian Ocean and extends over 5,648 km² with a population of about 110,000 people, of which about two thirds live in the city of Mandurah .

The region was named after Thomas Peel , a British man who failed in 1829 with an investment project to settle the region.

politics

The Peel Region is administered by the Local Government Areas : City of Mandurah , Shire of Boddington , Shire of Murray , Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Shire of Waroona .

history

Before European colonization that lived in this region Aborigines of Pindjarup the Aboriginal tribe of Noongar . The area should be settled as part of the Swan River Colony in 1829 under the direction of Thomas Peel. This private development and investment concept of a British colony did not work without government support, was poorly managed and failed. Some of the first settlers left the region and settled in more fertile areas inland.

In 1846, the first mining in Western Australia began in Mundijong with the extraction of lead , silver and zinc . In 1872 a sawmill was put into operation at Jarrahdale and then a railway line from Perth via Mundijong, Waroona and Dwellingup was built. Boddington was founded in 1912 for growing grain and breeding stock. In 1913 a brick factory was built there. In the 1970s and 1980s, the region expanded economically because people from the nearby city of Perth wanted to live in the countryside near the coast.

environment

The river system of the Peel region consists of 23 rivers and streams. The three main rivers are the Murray River , Serpentine River and Harvey River , which flow into the Peel-Harvey Catchment . The region's climate is influenced by the landscape with large bodies of water. The wetlands of the region, the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary ( estuaries ), formed a variety of flora and fauna , which led to the settlement, recreation and economic activities.

economy

The Peel region is economically dominated by the mining of bauxite by the BHP Billiton . In the manufacturing sector, there is an aluminum plant at Pinjarra and Wagerup and a gold mine at Boddington . The mining of mineral sand is also important. Agriculture, forestry and fishing constitute an important economic sector. Further employment takes place in the construction and banking sectors of Mandurah with 4,200 employees.

The development of tourism is promoted by the proximity of Perth, the capital of Western Australia . Recreation seekers can hike in the Serpentine and Yalgorup National Park and in the 55,000 hectare Lane-Poole Reserve near Dwellingup. The landscape on the Murray River also promotes tourism.
