history

20th and 21st centuries

Traunreut emerged from a munitions factory ( Muna ). In 1938 the Wehrmacht established the St. Georgen Army Munitions Plant in the St. Georgs Forest . Owned parts of the city of Traunstein and the communities of Stein , Traunwalchen, Pierling and Palling were part of a strictly closed area of 242 hectares. In more than 150 wooden barracks, stone houses and bunkers, poison gas grenades were filled and stored in the bunkers. In 1941 the first gas ammunition left the production facility. 2000 people were employed in the Muna. On May 3, 1945, the factory was taken by the US Army without a fight .

After 1945 many expellees settled in the area of the industrial estate St. Georgen ("Muna"). In 1949 the companies Siemens and Heidenhain founded companies in the buildings of the former ammunition plant, which created the necessary jobs. In 1947, eleven people died during defusing work. In 1948, the STEG (State Collection Society for Public Goods) began the detoxification work, and the Americans left the Muna.

On June 25, 1949 the foundation stone was laid for the St. Georgen industrial estate. On October 1, 1950, Lorenz Brandl in Munich / Upper Bavaria government formed the new community with the name Traunreut from areas of the communities Palling, Pierling, Stein an der Traun and Traunwalchen. Other suggested names included Georgenstadt, Neu-Stein and Neuwaldtraud. Traunreut then had 1,381 inhabitants. After it was founded in 1950, Lorenz Brandl was acting mayor for a year until Karl Löppen became the first officially elected mayor in 1951.

In 1954 the Catholic Church of the Redeemer and the Evangelical Church of St. Paul were completed. In 1958 Franz Haberlander became mayor and remained so until 1984. In 1960 Traunreut was promoted to town . On September 29, 1963, the last passenger journey for the time being took place on the Traunreut – Hörpolding railway line. In 1966 the ten thousandth citizen was born.

In 1984 Eduard Wiesmann became First Mayor and remained so until 2002. In 2002 Franz Parzinger became First Mayor and remained so until 2014. In 2004 the industrial and shopping town of Traunreut was the largest town in the district with more than 22,000 inhabitants. In 2006 the Traunstein – Traunreut railway was put back into operation. Klaus Ritter has been First Mayor since 2014 . In May 2020 he will be replaced by Hans-Peter Dangschat , who prevailed against Ritter in the runoff election on March 29, 2020.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1978 areas of the dissolved community Pierling were incorporated. On May 1, 1978, the previously independent communities of Stein an der Traun and Traunwalchen were dissolved and incorporated into Traunreut.
