history

Marquartstein Castle

Marquartstein Castle was founded in 1075 by the Chiemgaugrafen Marquardt. After the castle passed to the Wittelsbach family at the end of the 13th century , it was the seat of a maintenance office until 1803 . In that year, Marquartstein joined the Traunstein District Court , whereupon the castle gradually fell into disrepair.

In 1857 the castle was bought by Jemina Montgomery, an English writer, and her husband Cajetan by Tautphoeus , which made it private for the first time. After the Landschulheim Marquartstein was founded in the castle in 1928 , the castle was a grammar school for 30 years. After the school moved to the new castle not far from the castle in 1958, the castle was again dedicated to decay for around 30 years before it was bought and renovated in 1987 by the Munich art dealer Konrad O. Bernheimer .

The castle has been up for sale by Bernheimer again since 2015, but an auction in the London auction house Sotheby’s has so far been unsuccessful.

traffic

In 1884 the local railway Übersee-Grassau-Marquartstein was built . This was one of the most profitable in all of Bavaria thanks to a cement factory that had been asked to transport it by rail. In 1968 passenger traffic was discontinued due to a lack of passenger numbers. After no more goods traffic served the route from 1992, it was gradually dismantled. The place of the old train station in Marquartstein was used for a new building of the town hall, on the forecourt a buffer stop reminds of the former train traffic.

Church planting and incorporations

On April 1, 1938, Marquartstein became an independent political municipality, which was formed from parts of the communities Grassau , Schleching and Unterwössen and the forest districts of Marquartstein and Piesenhausen . In 1962 the three localities of Niedernfels, Pettendorf and Piesenhausen were changed from the community of Grassau to the community of Marquartstein. Since 1978 the municipalities of Staudach-Egerndach and Marquartstein have formed an administrative community based in Marquartstein.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 2,729 to 3,247 by 518 inhabitants or 19%.

coat of arms

Blazon: Split; on the left in silver a black gable with four steps, on the right in blue two crossed silver pilgrim poles, on the intersection covered with a silver pilgrim shell.

The stepped gable is the coat of arms of the von Hohenstein family, which died out around 1400, on seals from the 14th century. The Counts of Hohenstein are considered to be the founders of Marquartstein Castle in the late 11th century, i.e. at a time when there were no coats of arms. The castle came into the possession of the Counts of Kraiburg-Ortenburg before 1150 (died out in 1248). An Engelbert von Hohenstein was the ducal Bavarian castle keeper after 1276. The rear field shows a modification of the coat of arms of the Barons of Tautphoeus (two crossed silver pilgrim sticks, accompanied by four silver shells). Cajetan von Tautphoeus acquired the dilapidated nursing home in 1857 and had it restored. The municipal coat of arms is based on a design by Helmut von Tautphoeus.
