geography

Geographical location

Übersee is located in the Chiemgau , especially in the Achental on the south bank of the Chiemsee and thus in the area of the Inn-Chiemsee glacier . The Überseer Bach flows through Übersee and flows into the Chiemsee, just like the Tiroler Achen , which borders the municipality in the east.

The two peaks Westerbuchberg (603 m above sea level) and Osterbuchberg are located in the municipality .

Community structure

The community of Übersee has 36 districts:

Neighboring communities

The neighboring communities are Bernau , Grassau , Staudach-Egerndach and Grabenstätt .

history

In the Notitia Arnonis the name Übersee appears for the first time as "Ubersee" around the year 790. The monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg had the upper ownership of some estates in the municipality early on, but the most important landlord since the late Middle Ages was the Bavarian duke, who in the middle of the 13th century also acquired the bailiwick over other Salzburg possessions in today's municipality. In 1818 Übersee also became its own parish. Since 1860 the place was on the railway line Paris-Munich-Vienna. The church, which partly dates from the 13th century, gave way to a neo-Gothic church in 1902.

Over the centuries, overseas was predominantly characterized by agriculture, until tourism began in the post-war period, which brought the village to life. In the past, overseas was regularly hit by floods of the Tiroler Ache, until the river was tamed with the construction of a dam in the 1930s. Remains of temporary river beds in the middle of overseas are still visible today.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the community grew from 3,795 to 5,026 by 1,231 inhabitants or 32.4%.

coat of arms

Blazon : In silver over a blue wave base, a blue anchor crossed with a red key.

Reason: The colors silver and red as well as the key indicate the possessions of the Archabbey of St. Peter Abbey in Salzburg overseas. Silver and blue represent the connection to the Duchy of Bavaria and the Wittelsbachers. The base of the wave indicates the location of the community on the Chiemsee and the anchor to Saint Nicholas , patron of the boatmen.

Community partnerships

The overseas partner municipality is Monte San Biagio in the Italian region of Latium.

Culture

  • Exter Kunsthaus : The former studio of the painter Julius Exter is now operated as a gallery with changing exhibitions.

Events

Chiemsee Summer

The music festival " Chiemsee Summer " (formerly Chiemsee Reggae Summer) took place overseas from 1995 to 2017 and had almost 40,000 spectators in peak years. After a violent thunderstorm, the 2017 festival had to be canceled prematurely. The event was suspended in 2018 and the Chiemsee Summer will not take place in 2019 either, the reason for this being a lack of a concept with artistic and economic viability.

Alm Wiesn

The "Alm Wiesn" will take place overseas for the first time in 2019. A traditional Bavarian atmosphere for spectators is to be created with folk and brass music artists as well as alpine huts.

Fixed local clubs

Clubs and institutions based overseas organize their own club festivals every year, which are very popular. This includes:

  • The fishing festival of the local fishing club in the Feldwies district
  • The camping party of the Übersee / Feldwies campsite
  • The water watch festival of the Feldwieser water watch
  • The wine festival of the volunteer fire brigade overseas
  • The Überseer village festival, organized u. a. from the Overseas Trachtenverein

economy

Due to its location in the middle of the lake, mountains and moors, tourism plays an important role. Many residents rent out guest rooms or holiday apartments, which have their origins in the "summer visitors" culture . With the increasing development of the lake shore (see below) the number of day tourists also increased.

While the formerly formative agriculture is becoming less important, Übersee is increasingly developing into a location for medium-sized businesses and companies, for which industrial areas are increasingly being expanded and redesignated. An aviation company has also appeared there. The loss of importance in agriculture is particularly noticeable in the livestock sector.

In the district of Feldwies directly on the Chiemsee there is the local sailing harbor, as well as several restaurants, including the Hotel Chiemgauhof and the lido Übersee. The constant expansion of the waterfront has made Übersee a popular destination for day tourists from the Munich and Salzburg regions.

Übersee also has the largest campsite right on the Chiemsee and the only nudist beach on the Chiemsee.

traffic

The A8 motorway runs through the northern municipality in the Feldwies district. The community is also affected to the east by the St2096 between Grabenstätt and Grassau.

In addition, the Übersee station offers a connection to the local traffic of the Bavarian Oberlandbahn between Munich or Rosenheim and Salzburg as well as the long-distance traffic of the Deutsche Bahn between Berchtesgaden and Hamburg. From 1884 to 1968 (passenger traffic) and 1992 (freight traffic) there was a branch line to Marquartstein .

A bus line (9509) connects Übersee with surrounding communities and the ski resorts of Reit im Winkl and Kössen . In the ski season there is also a connection to the Winklmoosalm / Steinplatte ski area.

In the summer months, the Chiemseeschiffahrt operates a line from Übersee / Feldwies to Herren- or Frauenchiemsee.
